Woods Kennard Rawlinson passed away surrounded by his loving family at Halifax Health Daytona Beach FL after a brief illness from heart failure at the age of 91 on March 31 2011. He was born to Nora Belle and William Winthrop in Greenwood Delaware May 17 1919. He is predeceased by a brother John Rawlinson and sisters Margaret Svoboda Georgian Tashjian Mabel Rawlinson and Jean Pohly. On April 17 1942 he married Virginia Lake in Reading MI. He attended Western State Teachers College now Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo MI for 2 years with aspirations of becoming a shop teacher. He was known as a man who could repair and construct anything his whole life. His mother called him Buster as a young man because he was always ""busting"" things so he could put them back together again. After 2 years he began a life long passion for aviation after acceptance to a government sponsored aviation program at Purdue University. Upon completion he was soon hired on as a pilot for Pan American World Airways and very enthusiastically jumped feet first into flying the skies in the infancy of commercial aviation. He spent his first year in Africa. He flew long legs in his beloved DC-3's with limited navigational equipment. This time was filled with celestial navigation and dead reckoning landings. Upon his return Woody and his wife ""Jinny"" relocated to Seattle WA and celebrated the birth of their first child Sharan Dana. He spent this time flying to Alaska as the Navy contracted with Pan Am for flight operations during WWII. He moved his family to Miami briefly and then to Guatemala where his 2nd child Mary Virginia died during childbirth. Eventually transferred to Houston TX where they had 2 more children daughter Terry Marie followed by a son Kennard Lake 2 years later. Another transfer to Panama and then to Long Island NY. He spent the remainder of a celebrated aviation career in Miami FL and the Captain retired after 37 years of meritorious service and traveling the world. They remained in Miami for 30 more years until Hurricane Andrew prompted them to move northward to The Spruce Creek Fly-In Port Orange FL until his death. He was very affectionately known by many as Captain Woody! Above all else he was a fiercely devoted family man. He enjoyed playing bridge where he was the master of 3 No Trump. He was an avid gardener and really had the magic touch. He adored 2 canine companions Bruno and Dozer and their loss was significant for him. He never lost his zest for wheels gears motors and flight. He was loved and respected by many. Always the gentleman. His heart failed him but never failed those he loved. He is survived by his wife Jinny of 69 years; his 3 children Sharan Mahannah Ormond Beach FL Terry Rawlinson and husband Jim Foxman New Smyrna Beach FL and Kennard Rawlinson Gay GA; a sister Mary Creason and her husband Bill Grand Haven MI; a granddaughter Kaala Rae Rawlinson Athens GA Dave and Kelli Foxman and children Grant Cooper and Maryn Port Orange Matt and Karen Foxman and son Caden Port Orange and Adam and Betthany Foxman and daughter Lila Rose Orlando; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on April 9 2011 at the Fly-In off Taylor Road in Port Orange at 10 am where pilots will fly The Missing Man Formation over the airport. Friends are to meet at The Country Club. This will be followed with a breakfast brunch at the Country Club.
