A Funeral Service for William C. Spence Sr. 79 of Ormond Beach who passed away at home from complications of COPD on Sunday May 10 2009 will be held at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach at 2:00pm on Saturday May 16 2009. The family will receive friends Friday May 15 2009 from 6 to 8 pm. Born on October 30 1929 to Jack and Betty Spence in Oneonta NY he married Helen Herzberg of Ozone Park NY in 1952. He retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman serving in the Korean War and serving aboard the USS Davis (DD937) and USS Yosemite. He retired to Oneonta NY in 1966 where he earned a degree in education at SUNY Oneonta and taught fourth grade at Worchester Elementary. He and his wife moved to Ormond Beach in 1973 and owned and operated the Crossed Palms Motel and Quarterdeck Restaurant. Not one to retire he owned and operated the Coffee Pot Restaurant (now the World Famous Iron Horse Saloon). After that endeavor he started another career and retired from Scotty's Hardware. After officially retiring Bill and Helen spent their time traveling. He lived a full and rewarding life and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his son Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife Helen. Sons Jack Mike Steve and Billy; his daughters Susan Close (Steve) Kathy Poole (Bill) and Patty Thomas (Mark); 14 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren and his two brothers Doug and Don of Ormond By the Sea.
