IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Marshall
Reid, Jr.
June 14, 1937 – April 19, 2025
William Marshall Reid, Jr., 87, of Port Orange, Florida passed away April 19, 2025. Marshall was born June 14, 1937 to William Marshall Reid and Pearl Beshears Reid Miller in Iredell County, North Carolina. His father passed away at an early age, so Marshall began working to help support the family, such as harvesting tobacco for 40 cents per hour at the age of ten.
Marshall kept fond memories of riding along with moonshiners racing through the hills of North Carolina, and of hitch hiking into town on a Saturday with a dollar in his pocket for two movies, a burger at the Abner café, and a cigar, then hitch hiking back home with 9 cents left. In 1953, he traveled to Detroit to work in the auto industry, following his older brother Robert and numerous cousins. While employed at Cadillac Motors, he met and married Barbara Miller at Temple Baptist Church in Detroit. Marshall was hard working and industrious, always looking for opportunities to provide for the growing family that he was so proud of. He started collecting and repairing window air conditioners each fall to sell when the summer heat hit Detroit. Buying and selling out of his garage eventually led to Reid's New & Used - Surplus in Warren, Michigan, which he started in 1967. A big fan of the Daytona 500, Marshall moved his family to Daytona Beach in 1977, opening Reids Pawn Shop at 122 S Beach St. As his business grew, he built a larger location at 735 N. Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona. He sold the store in 1999, but never really retired from the business, continuing to buy and sell, as a hobby, out of his home until just a few years ago.
Marshall is predeceased by his parents, brothers Robert (Lynn) Reid and Denny Reid, sisters Fern (Richard) Jordan, Grace (William) Linney and Shelby (Edward) Coppola, and former wife Barbara Kress. He is survived by his daughters Shari Reid (Edward D.) Daugs, Teresa Reid, and Christina (Mike) Rabren, grandchildren Edward W. (Brittany) Daugs, Jordan Reid (Allison) Croy, Shelby Rabren, and Alex Rabren, and great grandchildren David Reid Croy, Edward G. Daugs, and Redford W. Daugs.
A private service is planned for the fall. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made, in his name, to Halifax Hospice.
