William Hughes McCafferty, M.D. died on October 17, 2014 at age 93 at Florida Hospital Hospice Care, Daytona Beach, FL. Born June 23, 1921 in Latrobe, PA to Grace Hughes McCafferty and William Dunn McCafferty

William (known as Bill), graduated from Latrobe (PA) High School, the University of Pittsburgh (where he was a diver on the swim team), and Temple Medical School (class of 1946) He proudly served in US Air Force from 1946-1949 and went on to a residency in general surgery at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Frederica Hamilton.

He was in private practice in general surgery in western Pennsylvania from 1953-1970. In 1970 he relocated to Daytona Beach and was in private practice in general surgery, serving on the staffs of Halifax Hospital and Ormond Memorial Hospital. Following his 1986 retirement from private practice, he served as Medical Director at Ormond Memorial Hospital.

Dr. McCafferty was an Eagle Boy Scout. In 1968 he volunteered for Project HOPE, serving as a physician in Ceylon aboard the hospital ship "Hope".

He was a private airplane pilot. He loved to buy and sell airplanes, especially Bonanzas, and was known by many as "Mr. Bonanza". He was an avid University of Pittsburgh sports fan. He was a member of the Ormond Beach YMCA and was among those who daily opened the Y doors and swam at 5:30 AM. He was a faithful member of the weekend "Bagel Boys"

William was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Frederica Hamilton McCafferty in 2012. He is survived by his son, Michael McCafferty, M.D. (Maryann) of Louisville, KY and daughter, Nancy Currid (John) of Charlotte, NC, by his grandchildren: Casie (Paul) Kichler, Allison (John) Buth, Elizabeth (Shelby) Bowen, Lt. David (Anna Lisa) Currid, and William McCafferty, as well as five great- grandchildren: Emma Kichler, Michael Kichler, Savannah Buth, Jackson Bowen, Lucas Bowen.

A Service of Remembrance will be celebrated on Saturday, October 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 1035 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers: Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
