William Gundy's Obituary
William James Gundy a resident of the Daytona Beach area for more than 40 years died peacefully Saturday August 13th at The Terrace of Daytona Beach after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.
He was born in North Syracuse New York on February 10th 1925 the youngest child of Ernest Gundy and Mae Sidley Gundy. He had three brothers and one sister Elmo Howard Ernest and Ernestine.
He was a staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Pacific Arena during the Second World War. He attended St. Andrews Seminary in Rochester after the war and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Niagara University in 1950.
He married Mary Agnes Fahey in 1951 and had 5 children.
In 1963 he moved to Florida to work on NASA?s Apollo Project helping to send a man to the moon. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of service to General Electric.
His beloved second wife Lee Fuss died in 1989 and his companion of many years Georgie Carleton moved to Ohio in 2003 to be closer to her daughter.
Bill Gundy was an avid outdoorsman and hiked and canoed all across the U.S. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and an active member of the Sierra Club. He was also a member of the Sons of the Desert and a widely renowned teller of tall tales.
He is survived by his two brothers Ernest Gundy N.Olmstead OH and Elmo Gundy Liverpool New York his five children Chad Gundy Leiden The Netherlands Tim Gundy North Brunswick NJ Celia Bower Alachua FL Blaine Gundy Deland FL and William Gundy Palm Coast FL and his six grand-children Jesse Bower Corey Bower Ellen Gundy Mira Gundy Jessica Gundy and Justin Gundy.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Volusia Flagler Sierra Club P.O. Box 929 Daytona Beach 32115 or call the Sierra Club chairman Betty O?Lauchlin 1-386-228-2538.
Memorial services will be conducted at Prince of Peace Church Ormond Beach at 11.00 o?clock Friday August 19th followed by a buffet lunch and reception in the church social hall.
