UNITED STATES NAVY VETERAN
William Hugh "Doc" Mathews passed away on November 11 2007 at home after a long illness. He was a warm caring Christian family man. He is survived by his loving devoted wife of almost 62 years Mary Ann his sons Gary of Tallahassee Mark & his wife Frances of Jacksonville and Rick & his wife Valerie of Palm Coast five grandchildren Melissa and Mark Allen Jr. Scott who preceded him in death Evan and Kelby and 3 great-grandchildren Bailey Andrew and Luke.
Born in Jacksonville FL on November 16 1922 son of Alice Schumpert and John Elie Mathews he went to Lee High School graduated from college and Medical School at Emory University in Atlanta he served in the United States Navy as a physician. He was in private practice as a general practitioner/cardiologist in Jacksonville where he provided his patients with office visits and the now extinct "house calls". In 1965 he left his practice and went to Prudential Ins. Co. and lent his expertise as one of a group of medical examiners for 22 years. He was a Methodist all of his life-a member of Riverside Park United Methodist in Jacksonville and moving to Palm Coast in 1987 at the Palm Coast United Methodist Church. A Sunday school teacher usher and choir member his faith brought him and lifted him up his entire earthly life.
He was a 32nd degree Mason (Scottish Rite) a member of the Florida Medical Society Sigma Chi Fraternity Shrine Club and was an Eagle Boy Scout. He and Mary Ann played golf together in Jacksonville and 2-3 times a week at the Cypress Knoll Golf Course in Palm Coast.
The Mathews' bridge in Jacksonville named after his father was no higher than the bridge Doc built during his lifetime climb toward his Creator.
