William H. Cantwell M.D. passed away May 29 2004 at Ormond Memorial Hospital Ormond Beach Florida.

Dr. Cantwell was born on June 19 1925 in Passaic New Jersey to Elizabeth Howard Cantwell and William Richard Cantwell. He grew up in Flushing Queens New York. He attended college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy New York and Seton Hall College in South Orange New Jersey. Dr. Cantwell served in the United States Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1947 in the Pacific Theater as a Lieutenant J.G.

In 1953 he graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn New York. Dr. Cantwell?s rotating internship was served at Meadowbrook Hospital in Long Island and he served residencies in general surgery at Newark City Hospital in Newark New Jersey and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Coral Gables Florida. He was also a graduate of the University of Miami Executive M.B.A. Program.

Dr. Cantwell was in private general practice in Rutherford New Jersey from 1955 to 1961 and in private practice as a general surgeon in Miami Florida for twenty years from 1965 to 1985. He was the Medical Director at Coral Gables Hospital in Coral Gables Florida from 1985 to 1986. He was a staff member at Baptist Hospital in Miami Florida; South Miami Hospital in South Miami Florida; Coral Gables Hospital in Coral Gables Florida where he was Chief of Staff from 1970 to 1985 and Chief of Surgery from 1970 to 1977 and 1979 to 1985. Dr. Cantwell was on the Board of Trustees at Coral Gables Hospital from 1972 to 1976. He was also Chief of Surgery at Larkin General Hospital in Miami Florida from 1971 to 1972. Dr. Cantwell also served as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine from 1965 to 1986 during which time he was also Attending in Surgery at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Miami Florida. Dr. Cantwell also served as Medical Director for Norwegian Caribbean Lines in Miami Florida from 1978 to 1985.

In 1986 Dr. Cantwell and his family moved to Glens Falls New York. Dr. Cantwell was Manager of Professional Assessment Services at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls New York from 1986 to 1989 and was Vice President of Professional Affairs at that hospital from 1989 to 1996. In 1999 Dr. Cantwell and his wife Margueride relocated to Ormond Beach Florida.

Dr. Cantwell was on the Board of the State of Florida Correctional Medical Authority and was a member of the American Medical Association Florida Medical Association Dade County Medical Association Volusia County Medical Society and the American Academy of Physician Executives. At the time of his death Dr. Cantwell held physician licenses in Florida and New York.

Dr. Cantwell was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach. He was an Associate Member of the Atlantic Federated Republican Women?s Club former Vice President of the Ormond Beach Republican Club and a member of the Volusia County Republican Executive Committee.

Surviving Dr. Cantwell are his beloved wife Margueride and eight children: Dr. Anthony Cantwell David Harold Cantwell Charles Richard Cantwell Stephen Andrew Cantwell William Howard Cantwell II Esquire John August Cantwell Priscilla Farrow Kathleen Parsons and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach on Tuesday June 1 2004 at 11:00am. There will be a viewing at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. preceding the service. Interment will immediately follow at Daytona Memorial Park.
