William K. Callam Lt. Col. (Ret) 90 of Ormond Beach passed away May 11 2013. A Funeral Service in his honor will be held Monday May 20 2013 at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond at 10:30am. He was born in Windsor Ontario Canada. His family moved to Detroit Michigan where Lt Col Callam continued his schooling. He attended Northwestern High School and two years at Hillsdale College MI. With the outbreak of WW2 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps (now USAF) and got his wings as a 2nd Lt. He started training in B-24 bombers and eventually was assigned to a crew which was sent to Italy in early 1944. On his 40th mission against German targets in Europe his B-24 was badly damaged by antiaircraft guns over Pleosti oil fields. He and his crew managed to struggle back to Yugoslavia when it became necessary to bail out of his crippled aircraft. Landing safely Lt Callam managed to join some Yugoslav guerillas and for the next four months joined with them in the attacks against German held towns. Eventually the Air Force flew in an evacuation team and flew Lt Callam and his crew back to their base in Italy for return to the States. Several years later he was assigned to a base in Germany to fly in the Berlin Airlift in 1948. Assignments to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) followed with flights in the B-29 to be followed by the new jet bomber the B-47. Then off to another duty in the Pentagon D.C. Then after four years there (now a Major) and having completed his college by getting his A.A. B.A. and M.S. from George Washington University he was sent for further schooling at the Air Command and Staff College. This was followed by another school the USAF Air War College. He was sent to be a USAF advisor at the Naval War College. He retired as a Lt Colonel in 1968 and moved to Ormond Beach and joined the Daytona Beach Community College (now Daytona State College) as a member of the faculty. Eventually he was promoted to be Chairman of the Social Science Department. Getting into politics Lt. Col. Callam ran for Ormond Beach City Commissioner and was elected seven times and spent 14 years as commissioner. He retired from DSC but still enjoyed instructing classes as an adjunct. His career included some 23 medals from the Air Force one being the prestigious Purple Heart and had flown over 16 military aircraft plus many civilian ones. He also held a private and commercial pilot's license. He loved playing tennis and golf. Bill leaves behind his beloved wife Mary and three children: William Callam Jr. (Jean) of Hong Kong Robert Callam of Ocala and Candace C. Ryan (Paul) of Winter Garden; also stepchildren: David Menzel (P.D.) of Chicago and Laura Dunn (Dean) of Fort Collier CO and six grandchildren: Savannah Kenneth Drew Ellie Cami and Janey.
