William J.
"Bill" Gainey
Jan 21, 1933 — Feb 12, 2022
William J. "Bill" Gainey died peacefully on February 12th, 2022 in Hospice Care in Flagler County, Florida. Bill was born on January 21, 1933 in Sanford, Florida, to Archie and Emily Gainey. Following graduation from Daytona Mainland High School, Bill and his twin brother Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force where they served together in the Korean War. Throughout their lives, Bill and his twin brother Bob were very close in both professions, hometowns and activities. Following their honorable discharge, both brothers became professional air traffic controllers, with Bill working the majority of his career at Miami International Airport. Following his discharge from the Air Force, Bill married the love of his life, Margaret Joan ("Peg") Milburn. Together they had two children, James Preston Gainey and Robert Eugene Gainey. Upon his retirement from the FAA, Bill continued his education at Santa Fe Community College.
Avid racing fans, Bill (along with his brother Bob) introduced his family to the sport of motorcycling. The entire family became accomplished riders, and Bill would later sponsor both of his sons in various forms of motorcycle racing. Devoted to his children, Bill also spent the majority of his retirement life following and volunteering in his sons' athletic pursuits, motorcycle riding, fishing, and being an avid fan of University of Florida sports. Having been raised in Daytona Beach, Florida, Bill dearly loved all forms of motorsports and was an original shareholder in NASCAR. Bill could be found watching his beloved races each and every weekend.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Peg. Surviving are his identical twin brother, Robert E. Gainey and his wife Garnett Gainey of St. Augustine, Florida; sons, James Preston Gainey and his wife Amy of Deerfield Beach, Florida; Robert E. Gainey and his wife Victoria, of Canton, Georgia; six grandchildren, Preston Gainey, Jr., Pierce Gainey, Anna Parker Gainey, Austin Gainey, Alex Gainey and Annabelle Gainey and; two great grandchildren, Noah Katherine Gainey and Brooklyn Gainey.
The family is planning a celebration of life in the very near future and details will be provided. Those who wish to remember Bill in a special way and in lieu of flowers, may make gifts in his memory to: "100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida.
