Wesley M. Jones, Jr., 93, of The Windsor in Palm Coast, FL, died December 31, 2014 at Florida Memorial Hospital Flagler. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lancaster of Palm Coast; his son-in-law, Ralph Lancaster of Palm Coast; three grandchildren: Ralph Lancaster, Jr., of Palm Coast, Julie Cowan of New Zealand, and Jeffrey Lancaster of Milwaukee; and one great-grandson, Liam Lancaster of Milwaukee.
Mr. Jones moved to Daytona Beach in 1983 after his retirement as National Advertising Manager of the Greensboro, NC News and Record. He began his working career with Western Auto Supply Co., in 1939, starting off as a railroad boxcar unloader, and working his way up to Control Manager. He left Western Auto in 1952 and joined the Greensboro News-Record to organize the newspaper's Advertising Dispatch Department. He was subsequently named National Advertising Manager, a position he held until his retirement.
While in Greensboro, he was very active in company, civic, and community activities. He served as President of the News-Record Credit Union, and as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Forest Oaks Country Club. While in his post at Forest Oaks, he was instrumental in bringing the nationally known Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament there. He was also active in the Pleasant Garden Methodist Church in Pleasant Garden, just outside of Greensboro, serving as chairman of their building committee. He also served on the church's administrative board for eight years, and on the board of trustees for two years. In Pleasant Garden he was a member of the Pleasant Garden Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Lion's Club, and was also a member of the Toastmaster's Club in Greensboro.
He attended numerous schools and universities for training in the marketing, management, and newspaper fields, including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Newspaper Production and Research Center in Oklahoma City, and others. He was a member of the International Newspaper Advertising Executives.
After moving to Daytona Beach, Mr. Jones became active in the Pelican Bay Golf and Country Club where he served on the Board of that organization. He also served as a part-time Ranger on the golf course.
A private service for the family will be held in the near future, with interment at Daytona Memorial Park. Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast is in charge.
