Walter F. Phelps 94 of Port Orange passed away on January 13 2010. He was born May 11 1915 to Bert and Frankie Phelps of Garrettsville Ohio. He was married to Martha Simpson for 68 years; she preceded him in death on January 11 2009. Surviving are Jane (Jim) France of Waynesburg Ohio Barbara King of Port Orange; and Jim Phelps of Topeka KS; seven grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one brother Rodney Phelps. He moved to Port Orange Florida in 1979 after retiring from the C.W. Payne Insurance Agency in Garrettsville. Walter served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII as a flight instructor and pilot flying cargo over the Himalayans. He was a life member of the Hump Pilots Assoc. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282 The Grand Lodge of F. & A.M. of Ohio and a member of the United Church of Garrettsville. During his retirement he enjoyed the activities and friendships of the Tanglewood Mobile Estates where he had served as Home Owner's Assoc. President many years ago. Following cremation a Memorial Service for Walter and Martha will be held at Lohman's Funeral Home Port Orange at 1201 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange FL 32127 on Monday January 25 2010 with the gathering from 1:00-2:00pm and service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Halifax Health- Hospice of Volusia/Flagler 3800 Woodbriar Trail Port Orange FL 32129.
