On April 26th 2010, the world lost a wonderful man. Walter R. Cordiner Sr., passed away with his family by his side, both in person and spirit.

Visitation will be held on Monday May 3rd from 4pm until 8pm, at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond, 733 W. Granada Blvd. Funeral Services will be Tuesday May 4th in the Chapel of Lohman Funeral Home at 9:30am. Walter will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery with full Military Honors.

He was born on August 11, 1927 in Newark, New Jersey to Andrew and Beatrice Cordiner. He was raised in Flatbush Brooklyn, New York and attended Erasmus High School. He served in the United States Navy on the S.S. WACHAPREAGUE during WWII. He went on to attend the First Ever Steamfitters Apprentice Class in 1947 with Local 638 Union in Manhattan, New York. He graduated first in his class and went on to be the youngest General Foreman in the history of Local 638. He had many achievements during his long career as a Steamfitter. He supervised the construction of seven Pavillions of the 1964 Worlds Fair, along with the Shorham Nuclear Power House and Northport Power Houses, along with many other power plants in the tri-state area. He constructed several terminals within JFK International airport along with many, many other construction sites.

He met the love of his life in June 1951 and later married her in July 1953. They raised their 6 children on Long Island, New York for more then 36 years. They went on to retire in Port Orange, Fl in 1990. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed sharing in the life experiences of his family. He was an avid fisherman, who enjoyed the Great South Bay in Long Island, New York and the jetty in Ponce Inlet, Fl, among other fishing holes. He spent over 45 years boating the Great South Bay, in search of the big fish. He would spend hours and hours on the weekends designing and painting his own lures to aide in his quest. In 1998, while fishing with one of his sons and two of his grandsons, he caught a huge weak fish, that was recorded in the Long Island Fisherman Magazine. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and friends at a local Bingo Hall. He spent many an hour emptying out the stuffed animal cranes only to donate them to the Ronald McDonald House and the Bikers against Child Abuse organizations to help comfort young children. He was a true music lover with a collection of music from the 1930's to present. He and his wife enjoyed many a dance floor throughout the country. He loved to read and was a huge fan of the old Westerns. He was a collector of sorts, that enjoyed his sailboats and shipmates, that his grandchildren and great grandchildren would love to give him. He would take great efforts to place them, so that each one could be viewed and enjoyed individual. In his day, he was known as a bit of a shutter bug, always with his face behind a camera begging for that perfect pose. Nascar was also a passion of his. Every Sunday you could find him tuned into the race. He was best known for his quick wit and uncanny ability to slay you with a very funny joke.

Walter is preceded in death by his father Andrew and mother Beatrice Cordiner, Sister Beatrice, and brother in law George Cook. Walter is lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; two sons, Walter (Donna)- St. James, NY, Wayne (Carol)- Freehold, NJ; four daughters, Carol (John) LeMaire- Selden, NY, Maureen (Wayne) Koch- Lindenhurst, NY, Karen- Port Orange, FL, Kathleen (Bonnie Bakko)- Port Orange, FL; twelve grandchildren, Joanna (Don) Neary- Medford, NY, Walter J.- Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Wayne Jr.- Freehold, NJ, Robert- Plainview, NY, Jennifer- Manhatten, NY, Matthew- West Palm Beach, Fl, Jonathan- Port Orange, FL, Erin- Freehold, NJ, Ashley- Freehold, NJ, Nicholas- Lindenhurst, NY, Bryan- Lindenhurst, NY, Christopher- Selden, NY; four great-grandchildren, Christian- Medford, NY, Alexandria- Medford, NY, Tyler- Medford, NY, Logan- Medford, NY; brother Andrew (Theresa)- Bethpage NY; sister, Dorothy Cook- Spotsylvania, VA; and many adoring nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his feathered friend, Kelly- the bird he loved to hate! Condolences may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
