­­­Dr. Wafik Makary, the passionate advocate of good health and wellbeing who devoted his life to the healing of his patients, loving his family, and friends, and serving his community and church has died at age 63 on August 22nd, 2022.

Husband to Amira, father to Peter and Gina, brother to Sherif Makary and Mona Makary.

Dr. Makary bravely battled against the rapid and progressively debilitating effects of ALS. During episodic events when rushed to the ER, he remained composed and lucid while being surrounded by the ER Director and staff, many of who he once mentored. They seek his advice and defer to simple instruction as he jots down "check my Troponin".  He was a soothing and guiding presence in the midst of what otherwise might tend to be a dramatic or chaotic environment of the ER - they are glad to be reunited with their mentor.

His illustrious medical journey spanning 4 decades starting at Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt, before charting his course across the pond to the United States where he accomplished landmark achievements in education and practice at several institutions including the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Residency, Internal Medicine. He was a professor at Florida State University, College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Florida where he mentored a multitude of students. His licenses included the states of New Jersey and then Florida, where he established and built a thriving medical practice in Port Orange, Volusia County, with several hospital associations included AdventHealth and Halifax Health Medical Center. Before settling in Port Orange, he traveled extensively internationally.

Dr. Makary's compassion for patients was exemplary, even caring those who had no means to pay for any medical attention. He ensured care for his patients until the last moments of his own health battles with ALS, just months before he died. These things were always important to him. His time with patients was generous and thorough, no detail was too little or unimportant when he listened to them, so that he can provide care for whole person.

He was a gifted musician who picked up and played the guitar extensively, a passion that lives on and continues in his family.

An avid tennis and soccer player, he would rarely if ever miss a soccer game on Sunday where he played adults, and coached kids.

Those who knew him, describe Dr. Makary with a long list of words:

Compassionate, Faithful, Servant, Charismatic, Generous, Intellectual, Cultured, Athletic, Kind, Organized, Punctual, Teacher, Musical, Knowledgeable, Detailed, Talented, Disciplined, Peaceful, and that he lived life with Enthusiasm. To sum it all up, those close to him describe him as a Renaissance Man, who one could never get enough of his conversations and friendship.

In the words of the Apostle St. Paul, Dr. Makary has

"…fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith."

Funeral Services Friday 8/26/2022 at 11 am at St. George Coptic Orthodox Church, 300 n. Halifax Ave, followed by the burial at the Cemetery by Lohman's Funeral home located at 1423 Bellevue Ave, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
