Obituary

Verna LaJune "Sally" Lowry completed her long goodbye to her loving family and caregivers, and met her Savior at her home in Palm Coast, Florida on December 21, 2014, her 87th birthday. Verna Miller was born December 21, 1927 in Dalhart, Texas and grew up in San Angelo, Texas, the only daughter of Nate Pennell and Mildred Beatrice (Lyon) Miller. She graduated high school in Sunnyside, Washington in 1945 then attended Shannon West Texas Memorial School of Nursing where she trained with the Nurse Cadet Corps, graduating in 1948 with her R.N. degree. In 1949, she was commissioned by the U.S. Naval Reserve and was subsequently stationed at U.S. Naval Hospitals in Long Beach, CA; Guam; Bremerton, WA; Yokosuka Japan; and Bethesda, MD.

At Bethesda she met her husband of 60 years, Robert William Lowry, also of Palm Coast. Upon marriage in 1954, Sally left the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant JG, and later completed certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) training in Detroit, MI. She practiced anesthesia for more than 30 years in Michigan, Colorado and Iowa. During that time, she supported her husband through medical school, and raised a family of 3 children and many pets. She was also an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Davenport, Iowa, participating in their bell choir.

Sally enjoyed countless hours of cross-stitching and other handwork; her Christmas stockings are cherished heirlooms to many children now in adulthood! Among her other joys were a love of baseball which she shared with her father, evening summer walks, and beautiful music including acapella choral singing to which she was introduced by the Augustana College Choir (Rock Island, Illinois). Sally and her husband custom-built their retirement home in Palm Coast, Florida, and moved there upon its completion in 2003. She was comfortable there with her family and later many companion care givers until joining the company of saints.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Doyle Nate Miller, and family dogs Heidi, Tippy, Buster, Boots, Babe, Jodie, Dutchess, Jasmine, Keesha, Bella, Eros, and Kita. Along with husband Robert, she is survived by daughters Dannette Kay (Lawrence Chew) of Ripley, WV and Diana Kathleen (Stephen Moon) of Tacoma, WA and by son Daniel Keith of Ormond-by-the-Sea, FL.

Sally and her family are forever grateful to her dear care companions of the last 5 years in addition to the many angels of Halifax and Haven Hospices. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. www.woundedwarriorproject.org. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast.
