Funeral services for Vera Mae Johnson will be held on Saturday July 31st at 5:00 P.M. at the 7th Day Adventist Church 401 North Williamson Boulevard Daytona Beach Florida. Her family will receive friends on Friday July 30th from 4:00 ? 6:00 P.M. at the Lohman Ormond Funeral Home 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach Florida.

Vera Mae Johnson was born on April 6 1913 in Borden Saskatchewan Canada. She arrived 15 minutes before her fraternal twin George Michael Koseruba. Vera was the third of five children. Nicholas was the oldest child followed by Marguerite. Then the twins were born Vera and George and then baby sister Sarah. Vera?s mother Epestenia Anna Fedosenko and father Metrofan Eufain Koseruba came to Canada from their home in Kiev Russia. Metrofan had arrived in Canada before the rest of the family. He wanted to find a farm and get established. Epestenia and the only two children they had at the time Nicholas and Marguerite had purchased tickets for the Titanic. They were to embark on its maiden voyage. Epestenia was crushed when the authorities would not allow her to leave the country because certain paper work was not in order. She would have to book a later voyage.

Vera grew up on a wheat farm. Vera and George knew what they wanted to do early in life. George was to be a doctor and Vera determined that she would become a nurse. She attended Broadview Academy in La Grange Illinois and graduated from there in 1935. She then attended Washington Missionary College in Takoma Park Maryland?now known as Columbia Union College. She graduated from there with her nursing degree in 1940. Her twinster George went on to become a physician. Vera was very proud of the fact that she and George were indeed doctor and nurse.

In 1941 Vera married Wilson S. Johnson. They had three children Donald Carol and Helen. Wilson settled his career in business and Vera enjoyed nursing. They moved from Clayton Delaware to Baltimore Maryland in 1952 where they lived for nine years. Vera worked at John?s Hopkins Hospital and did private duty nursing in homes.

After a divorce in 1961 Vera moved to Takoma Park Maryland. She worked at the Washington Sanitarium and Hospital until she retired in 1978. Many times she was asked to work on a certain floor because a patient had asked for her by name. She was dearly loved during her 37-year nursing career.

In 1980 Vera made a big move from Takoma Park Maryland to Ashland Oregon where her daughter Helen and husband Roger Cain resided. In 1983 Roger and Helen were called to pastor a church in Vancouver Washington. Shortly after Vera moved to Eureka California to be close to her daughter Carol who also is a nurse and son-in-law Bill Tol. Vera lived in Eureka until 1998 when she moved to Portland Oregon. She lived at Cherry Blossom Cottage an assisted living home managed by her grandson?s wife Stacey Tol. Daryl and Stacey shared many good times with Vera for the 17 months she was there. Then her son Donald Johnson and his wife Minnie took Vera to live with them in Georgia where they enjoyed a year together in their home. Vera returned to her daughter Carol and resided with Carol and Bill until she died on July 18 2004. Vera has resided in Ormond Beach Florida for 2 ½ years.

Vera was an exceptional nurse but had many other talents and hobbies as well. She loved poetry and wrote and published poems for many years. She enjoyed reciting readings that she had memorized and loved to write letters corresponding with all her family. Vera was a talented artist as well. She painted many beautiful paintings. She was a gourmet cook. She seldom used recipes and was famous for her many wonderful dishes.

Vera loved God with all her heart. She had an active devotional life and kept God first in her daily focus. She had many wonderful friends and will be remembered as a very gregarious and friendly person.
