Vasila "Bessie"
Kostoglou
Sep 14, 1932 — Dec 5, 2020
New Smyrna Beach
Bess Kostoglou, 88, of Canfield, Ohio, passed away December 5, 2020. She moved in 2016 to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, with her husband, Anthony, and their son, John and Lisa, and granddaughter, Vasilia A. Kostoglou.
She was born September 14, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Constantine and Caliope (Speis) Valantasis
Bess moved with her family to Campbell, Ohio at an early age. She grew up with three brothers and two sisters. She was strong, healthy, independent, and well respected in her community.
Bess Valantasis married Anthony Kostoglou July 9, 1960. Their son, John was born November 30, 1963. John was the absolute light of her life. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law.
Bess led a full, happy, and healthy life. She was close with her relatives and is remembered as the Aunt who would get the family together. Her nieces and nephews have fond memories from their childhood, spending time with her in Ohio & vacations to Florida.
She was her son John's biggest supporter. She was there for him every day. John was her first call of the day, every day. She waited patiently for the arrival of her only grandchild, Vasilia, who was born May 11, 2010. Little Vasilia quickly became the apple of her eye. Suddenly, after all the years, the attention shifted, ever so slightly.
Bess was a member in good standing for most of her life, at St. John's Greek Orthodox Church, Canfield, Ohio. She and Tony moved to Florida, Thanksgiving 2016 to be closer to John, Lisa, and Vasilia. She enjoyed being with her family, blue crabs, oysters, seafood, playing cards, Greek music, sweet treats, and our family dog, Polo, her protector.
Bess is survived by Anthony Kostoglou, her husband of 60 years, son John Kostolgou (Lisa), granddaughter Vasilia, brother-in-law George Kostoglou (Kostoula), sister-in-law Olympia Peroulakis, Catherine Valantasis, Nancy Valantasis and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She is preceded in death by many relatives.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, December 29 th at 9:45 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church; 129 North Halifax Ave. Daytona Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in memory of Bess Kostoglou.
