Thomas Vickers' Obituary
Thomas H. Vickers Sr. ?Florida?s Oldest U.S. Marine? passed away on Sunday February 19 2006 at Grand Oaks Health & Rehab Center in Palm Coast. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Thursday February 23 2006 in the chapel of Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 until 3 PM prior to the service.
Husband of the late Frances M. Vickers nee: Fizur; Tom was born to the late Ida Beryl Vickers nee: Beltz and George William Vickers in Philadelphia PA on July 10 1910. He attended West Philadelphia High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1930 serving in the Nicaragua & Haiti Campaigns from 1930 ? 1932. He was honorably discharged in 1933. From there he began working for Bond Bread as a Breadman on horse drawn wagons and as a route builder. After that he went to work for The Budd Company as a Pressman. While working for Budd he helped organize the first Auto-Workers Union there. He later became Vice-President and Acting President of the union. He also served for many years as a Shop Steward until his retirement in 1976. While doing all of this he still found time to serve as a Democratic Committee Man Vice Ward Leader in Philadelphia and on the Church Council of Good Shepard Lutheran Church. After retirement Tom and Frances moved to Palm Coast in May 1978. He also served as a Democratic Committee Man here. Tom and Frances celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary before her passing in June of 2003.
Tom was a member of VFW Post #8696 and was very active in the Marine Corps League?s Flagler County Detachment # 876. He also attended St. Mark By The Sea Lutheran Church.
Left to cherish Tom?s memories are his sister Dorothy Vickers McArdleEdward of Philadelphia; sons Thomas H. Vickers Jr.Jean of Longport NJ George W. Vickers Sr.Maxine of Wade NC and Stanley J. Vickers Sr.Joanne of Philadelphia; daughter Ida Beryl Vickers Di StefanoVince of Christiansburg VA; sixteen grandchildren; and thirty six great grandchildren; as well as several nieces & nephews.
