Stephen Lang, age 80, of Ormond Beach, passed away with his loving wife and constant companion by his side holding his hand, at eleven minutes past eleven on the morning of Tuesday, October 31, 2023, after a series of strokes and brain seizures. Steve was born on July 30, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, the first child of Robert Geisburg Lang and Juanita Swinney Lang. He was predeceased by the deaths of his parents and of his only sister, Julia Lang Lightman Bowers.

Steve was reared in Grenada, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, seeking his engineering degree. He was a self-taught computer guru though. His great interest in computers led to the creation and development of Chariot, a federal property management computer software program of which he was most proud, which has been sold nationally since 1991.

He was a Humanist who met his wife, Patricia, at the Unitarian Church of the River in Memphis in December 1975, after which time they became inseparable, marrying in April 1977. During their Memphis years Steve enjoyed using his wood-working skills, making desks, plant stands, end tables and umbrella stands. Then during their years in Grenada, Mississippi he used those skills when the couple personally built their Jefferson Davis style house on a wooded, hillside lot, which was then featured in the Grenada Garden Club's Christmas Tour of Homes in 1984.

During the Grenada years Steve became a graduate of the Institute of Real Estate Management. By then he had created his own property management company, PSL Management, a company which specialized in apartment complexes. He and his wife managed over a thousand units in family-owned HUD and Rural Development complexes throughout Mississippi for many years.
Also, during the Grenada years, Steve took up flying, taking lessons in Memphis and becoming a licensed private pilot in 1991. The couple then enjoyed exploring much of the South and Midwest, first in the little Cessna two-seater and then in his Beechcraft Sierra plane, exploring his way to places like Biloxi, Atlanta, Kansas City, and Little Rock.

Throughout the years the couple were world travelers, touring close to one hundred countries before retiring and moving to Florida. Steve's favorites by far were the 2012 Miami U. Celtic Lands Tour, of France, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, with Dwight David Eisenhower Il and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and the 2018 Changing Tides of History tour, cruising the Baltic Sea with Lech Walesa (former President of Poland) and Sergei Krushchev (son of Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev).

Since moving to Ormond Beach in 2008 Steve has greatly enjoyed many good times at the annual Miami University Graduate Research Forum in Oxford, Ohio, and Miami University's Winter College events here in Sarasota and in Charleston. In 2015 Steve and Pat made a transformational investment in Miami's Graduate School and in empowering future generations of bright, talented women to achieve their own ultimate good. The Stephen and Patricia Lang Graduate Research Support Fund was created, endowing funding to support and expand research opportunities for women pursuing graduate degrees.

Then there was the rigorous daily exercising--since his heart attacks twenty years ago. Though he had reluctantly given up running 5 K's, the last one being the Daytona Beach Firecracker 5K Beach Run in 2019, he still continued to grow stronger and stronger via jogging. He was known as a runner here in the neighborhood who got out about 6:45 every morning. In June and July 2020, he jogged 200 miles in The Endless Summer Challenge, jogged another 200 miles in the five-week Sweatin' Out the Summer Challenge that followed, and then another 200 miles in the Just Keep Moving Challenge in Sept. and Oct. of that year.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, Steve is survived by two sons from a previous marriage, Stephen W. Lang, Jr. (Suzannah) of Memphis, Tennessee and Robert Wade Lang (Rebeccah) of New York, as well as three grandchildren, William, Virginia and Laura Lang.

Stephen believed that we human beings are simply another part of nature - and that death is nature's way of cleansing. Through death, we clear the way for new life. He believed that an individual's happiness and experiences are engraved in history and the deceased will live through the memories and experiences that his loved ones hold in their hearts.

Arrangements are under the entrusted care of the Lohman Funeral Home as 733 Granada Blvd in Ormond Beach. Visitation will be on Saturday, November 11, 2023, from 12:30 2:30, followed by the funeral service and interment at the Volusia Memorial Park at 550 N. Nova Rd, Ormond Beach, Florida.
