Stanley J. Kamykowski 90 passed away peacefully at home with his wife Betty at his side on Friday September 20 2013. Family and friends will be received Tuesday September 24 2013 from 4:00-6:00pm at Lohman's Funeral Home Ormond Beach FL. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday September 25 2013 at The Basilica of Saint Paul Catholic Church on the comer of Ridgewood Ave. and Mullally St Daytona Beach FL. Family and friends will be received from 8:00-8:45am with Mass starting at 9:00am. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Volusia Memorial Park 550 North Nova Rd Ormond Beach FL. Stan was born in South River NJ on September 10 1923 and relocated to Ormond Beach FL upon retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by his Mother Father three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife Betty Kamykowski of Daytona Beach Shores; son Wayne of Prescott Valley AZ; stepsons: Ken and wife Barbara Hayes Ormond Beach FL Todd Hayes Daytona Beach Shores FL Scott and wife Kelly Hayes Llano TX; nephews Larry and wife Joane Kay and Eugene Kamykowski of South River NJ; and niece Joanie and Husband Richard Dobrzynski of Sayreville NJ. The light of Stan's life were his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Stan and Betty loved to travel throughout the US covering over a 100 000 thousand miles together. They had a summer home in the mountains of Prescott AZ for many years. He was in the Army serving in WWII receiving the Purple Heart and has been enrolled in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in recognition of exceptional sacrifice in defense of the United States of America. One of the family's favorite stories with Stan has to do the war. Stan was in the army but refused to speak of it due to all the tragedy he had seen. Anytime they would bring it up he would request they not ask about it. As the years passed by Betty knew the family were all interested in his story yet never getting any information out of him. One day to their surprise Betty had found Stan's Purple Heart Medal. It was beautiful They needed to discover the story behind the metal. With Purple Heart in hand they asked Stan again ""tell us about what happened?"" Stan finally relived and retold the story of a horrific gun battle that took place in Monte Cassino Italy. He was a gunner with two ammunition soldiers in toe. They were all caught in the battle; Stanley was wounded and the other two solders were killed beside him. Hearing the story first hand as if he were that young 20 year old soldier they couldn't imagine being in that position at such a young age. Obviously it was traumatic. They took the Purple Heart to Michael's and had it professionally framed and presented it to Stan. It hangs prominently in their living room to this very day. Stan then had the opportunity for one last road trip with Betty to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor NY and document his story for generations to hear. It's truly remarkable to watch him tell his story. His family has never been taken back by such emotion as the day they watched his video. Stan died a true American hero who fought for his country and our very freedoms we enjoy today. He was a lifelong Republican and a patriotic American. Stan retired from Middlesex General Hospital and was a commercial painter known for projects such as hospitals and other large institutions. Stan was a loyal New York Yankees fan through and through. Later in his life he enjoyed watching old time favorite western movies especially John Wayne. Stan was a devout Catholic and enjoyed watching services each Sunday. He was happy with the new Pope.
