Stanley Betts, 92, of Ormond Beach, died January 20, 2017 at his home in Ormond Beach with his family. He
leaves his longtime beloved companion, Jessie Schminke; his daughters, Bonnie E. Belt of Frederick, MD and Teresa G. Betts of Solon, OH; two grandsons, John M. Leache of Frederick, MD and Andrew W. Rafalski of Streetsboro, OH; 5 great-grandchildren; and many close friends. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Eugene Betts of Pompano Beach FL and Thomas Betts of Ormond Beach, FL. He was born and raised in Washington, D.C., the son of Stanley and Connie Betts. He graduated from American University with a B.A. in Economics. While at the university, Mr. Betts was elected to "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges", the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Scholarship in Economics, and President of
the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was the holder of the Silver Star, 3 Bronze Battle Stars, and the French Legion of Honor for combat service in World War II. For three years, he was the Special Representative of the Aetna Casualty and Surety Company in Washington, D.C. He joined Bogley, Harting, and Betts, Inc. in 1951 and became president and C.E.O. He sold the company to Reese-Yeatman in 1995. His business honors include being President of the Montgomery-Prince Georges Association of Insurance Agents, President and Lt. Governor of the Bethesda Civitan Club, President and State National Director of the Maryland Association of Insurance Agents, and a member of the Board of Directors of Suburbia Federal Savings and Loan Association. In 1971, the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland, Inc. named him "Insurance Man of the Year". He also served for three years as a member of the Executive Committee of the Independent Insurance Agents of America, Inc. (formerly the National Association of Insurance Agents). Mr. Betts was a member of the Myron E. Parker Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Halifax River Yacht Club in Daytona Beach and Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach. For many years, he was President of Camp Echo Lake - a camp for underprivileged youth in Montgomery County Maryland.
He was a volunteer reader for the "Washington Ear", a radio station that broadcasts 24 hours a day to the blind. In addition, he was a volunteer with Hospice in Montgomery County, MD and Volusia County.
He was affiliated with Citizens Savings Bank in Maryland since April of 1976 and was elected to the Advisory
Board. In August 1976, he was elected to the Board of Directors, in 1988 was elected Chairman of the Board, and in 1989 elected as Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Betts retired in 1994 and moved to Ormond Beach, FL. He will be greatly missed by his family and many, many loyal friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday January 25, 2017 in the Chapel at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond. A Visitation will be held from 12:30pm til the Service begins. Immediately following the service a reception will be held at Oceanside Country Club, Ormond Beach, FL. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Florida Hospital HospiceCare.
