Sol Friedman age 86 passed away quietly on Sunday Nov. 27 2005 surrounded by his family in his home in New Smyrna Beach FL. Funeral Services were Monday Nov. 28th at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond with Rabbi Barry Altman officiating. Interment followed at Daytona Memorial Park. Mr. Friedman was born to Harry and Celia Friedman in New York City on March 15 1919. He was a graduate of Brooklyn College City University of NY and studied at the Manhattan School of Music Julliard and the Henry St. Settlement. As both an educator and a musician Sol was a beloved teacher with the NYC School System for 30 years touching the lives of many through his music. Sol also played jazz professionally and studied musical improvisation with notable jazz pianist Teddy Wilson. He was a lifetime member of ASCAP The American Society of Composers Artists and Performers and shared his love of music with many. While in New York Sol volunteered at the Bayville Renaissance House for Children with Cerebral Palsy. Four years ago after vacationing in Florida for many years Sol and his wife Martha moved to New Smyrna Beach permanently from Sea Cliff NY where they had lived for forty years. Once in Florida Sol continued to share his gift of music with the patients in the Bert Fish Medical Center and as a volunteer for the extended family at the Cormeth Center for which he received special recognition. Above all Sol was devoted to his family and was a kind and loving husband father grandfather and great grandfather. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 63 years Martha his three sons; Michael and his companion Jennifer Weller of New Smyrna Beach FL; Richard and wife Susana of Plainview NY; Phillip and wife Bonnie of Middletown NJ; his 5 grandchildren Robert Nancy Jeffrey David and Rachel; his great grandson Matthew Jacob his sister Edith Poretsky of Roslyn NY and his aunt Sally Letz of New York City.
