Sidney "Lavonne" O'Gwynn, 84, of Port Orange, died January 23, 2019. Born April 22, 1934, to William and Josephine Driskell O'Gwynn in Grand Bay, Ala. Reared in South Alabama, he lived in Port Orange for more than 40 years. Lavonne was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a master sign-maker, creating several notable signs, including the original Space Mountain sign, and the guitar which sat above Miami's Hard Rock Café. He invented several items, including a patented device for lifting concrete sidewalk slabs. He was pre-deceased by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his sons, Martin (Deborah) O'Gwynn of Taylors, S.C., and Russell (Susan) O'Gwynn of Pinson, Ala.; grandsons Andrew (Melanie) O'Gwynn, Esq., of New York, N.Y., and Timothy O'Gwynn of Mountain Brook, Ala.; granddaughters Ariel (Zac) Martin of Trussville, Ala., and Haleigh O'Gwynn of Pinson, Ala.; brother J.L. O'Gwynn; and brother-in-law Travis Whitley. He also is survived by numerous friends, including Betty Till Wilson and Shannon Peck, both of Port Orange. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach for four decades, serving at various times as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, usher, and greeter. A memorial service celebrating Lavonne's life will be Sunday, January 27, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach, including a gathering of family and friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach Building Fund or the Sidney Lavonne O'Gwynn Memorial Fund at North Greenville University.
