Obituary

Shirley Ann Sliwa died December 11 2006 after a short illness. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday January 12 2007 at 4:00 PM at Lohman Funeral Home 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach. A Reception will follow at Lohman Funeral Home. Born as Shirley Harwood on March 31 1934 in Gillman IL she grew up in Chicago. She started dancing at the age of 8 and by the time she was 16 she was the Principal Dancer (Prima Ballerina) for the Chicago Ballet Company. Shirley later performed for the American Ballet Theater in New York City. She retired from dancing and married her high-school sweetheart Kenneth Sliwa in 1953 at age 19. They started in Marshall MI but settled in Horseheads NY in 1962 moving later to nearby Big Flats in 1968. Shirley threw herself into raising her four kids and was busy in Cub Scouts Girl Scouts (regional vice-president) and other activities too numerous to list. In 1972 she joined the National Soaring Museum as a secretary-clerk and within four years she rose to the Executive Director position. She successfully guided the museum through several capital expansions and fund-raising drives receiving many commendations including the Warren Eaton Memorial Trophy from the Soaring Society of America. During this time she also was a major supporter of the Harris Hill Junior Soaring Organization. After living in France and traveling throughout Europe for nearly two years she and Ken retired and moved to Daytona Beach in 1992. Shirley was very active with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and was a key supporter of athletics in particular the baseball team. She was a former president of the Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial Auxiliary in addition to serving as a tireless trainer with the hospital's Teen-Aged Volunteers (TAV) organization. She was preceded in death by her husband Ken in 1996. She is survived by her children Steven (White Salmon WA) Christine (Plymouth MA) David (White Salmon WA) and Susan (Littleton CO). She is also survived by her sister Joyce and 7 grandchildren: Tabitha Aleah Ashley Brian Marisa Nathan and Andrielle. Ceremonies are currently planned for 3pm January 12th at the Tomoka Christian Church 1151 West Granada Blvd Ormond Beach Fl 32174. Reception will follow at the church. Memorials may be made to the Kenneth and Shirley Sliwa Memorial Fund at Embry-Riddle University Office of University Development 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd. Daytona Beach FL 32114 or the Florida Hospital Memorial Foundation 770 W Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach FL 32174.
