Obituary

Shirley Lois (Clayton) Coyne,101, of Orange City, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026.

Shirley was born on October 29, 1924, to Walter and Adeline Clayton in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of two children. She attended Muskingum University and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1946 with a degree in Sociology. There she joined Chi Omega sorority and met her college sweetheart and husband of 62 years, Thomas Coyne. After getting married in Pittsburgh in 1949, they moved their family to Canfield, Ohio where they raised their three children, Sue, Tom Jr. and Terry for 26 years. Her hobbies included travel, shopping, playing the piano, growing flowers in her garden and making floral arrangements for friends and family. She was an active member of St. Michael's Parish and belonged to the Altar Guild.

She and her husband, Tom, enjoyed a very active social life at Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield, Ohio. They retired to Florida in 1985 and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida.  They continued their active social life at Pelican Bay Country Club where Shirley taught water aerobics and enjoyed visits by her children and grandchildren. They were also members of the Halifax Yacht Club.

Shirley loved music. She enjoyed playing the organ and was known by all as the keyboard player for the band that entertained residents every Monday night at John Knox Village.

She was a devoted wife and mother.  Shirley was predeceased by her father, Walter Clayton, her mother, Adeline Clayton Babcock, her brother, Donald Clayton and her son-in law Bill Mullen. She is survived by children, Susan Mullen, Tom Jr. (Cecie), Terry Sr. (Jeanne); her ten grandchildren:  Patrick, Maureen, Terry Jr., Kelly, Colleen, Mark, Chris, Conor and her eight great grandchildren, Rocco, Mickey, Homer, Rex and Scout Mullen; Willa and Michael Montagano; Benjamin Doane; Casey and Liam Coyne.

Family and friends will gather at 9 AM before the 10 AM Funeral Mass on Thursday, March 5 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Debary, Florida 32173. Burial will be immediately following at Daytona Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to: St Ann's Catholic Church, 26 Dogwood Trail, DeBary, FL 32713; Sisters of St. Benedict,1402 Southern Avenue, Beech Grove, IN 46107.
