Sherman Elden Grubbs 79 died May 30 2012 peacefully at home surrounded by his family. One of eleven children he was born in Perry FL and grew up in Ocala. Sherman moved to the Daytona Beach area in 1958. He served in the National Guard worked in the newspaper industry beginning at the Ocala Star Banner and eventually at the Daytona Beach News-Journal where he started as a pressman in 1958. He became Pressroom Superintendent in the 1970's the position he held until retiring in 2007. Sherman was a joyful soul who enjoyed hunting fishing golfing and motorcycle riding. He had a witty sense of humor and a contagious laugh. He served in area churches as Sunday School Superintendent and was Deacon Emeritus at First Baptist Church South Daytona. Survivors include his devoted wife of 50 years Viola Grubbs; son Terry Grubbs (Sandy) Port Orange FL; daughter Lori Gamboa (George) St. Augustine FL; brother Elven Grubbs Steinhatchee FL; sisters Bea Kast Fresno CA; Sara Thompson Alpharetta GA; Marcel Brown Alachua FL; grandchildren Kayla T.J. Evann Lindsay and Chris; six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday June 5 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church South Daytona with the Rev. Ronnie Barton officiating internment to follow at Daytona Memorial Park on Bellevue. Visitation will be on Monday June 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Lohman Funeral Home on Bellevue Daytona Beach. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church South Daytona or Vitas Hospice.
