Long time area resident, Selma L. Shapiro, age 92, of Daytona Beach, passed away peacefully at Manor on The Green Nursing Home in Daytona Beach on Tuesday, July 8th, following a long illness. Private Interment was held at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Daytona Beach on Friday, July 11th.
Selma Shapiro was born in Newark, New Jersey, on February 21, 1922, into the family of Irving and Lena Golden. Selma Shapiro graduated from the New Jersey Business College in 1941, and developed a distinguished career as a Legal Secretary.
A war time bride, Mrs. Shapiro was married to the late Dr. Stanley L. Shapiro (a Daytona Beach Podiatrist) for 55 years. Mrs. Shapiro moved to this community in 1944 where her husband served in the Army Medical Corps. Selma and Dr. Stanley Shapiro raised their family in Daytona Beach and both developed a very active community life.
As a charter member of the Ortona Garden Club in 1948, Selma Shapiro served as the Secretary and President of Palm Circle, a branch of the Ortona Garden Club. As an active member for 18 years with this club, Selma served several terms on the Garden Club Council Board, which included leadership responsibility of EveryBodys Flower Show.
In 1955, Selma Shapiro was inducted for membership into the Palmetto Club and was active in the Palmette Department for Cancer. In 1990, after 35 years of service, Selma Shapiro became an Honorary Life Member of the Palmetto Club.
Mrs. Shapiro became a member of Temple Israel in 1944 and was also a member of Bnai Brith Womens Division of Hadassah. Mrs. Shapiro served from 1956 " 1960
as Chairman of the Temple Israel Religious School and as Temple Israel Sisterhood President in 1962 " 1963. Selma enjoyed reading and playing bridge.
Mrs. Shapiro is survived by her daughter, Linda Flower Gross (Albert) of Longwood, Florida, her son, Dr. Philip Shapiro (Marsha) of Ormond Beach, Florida, and her grandson Matthew Shapiro (Kimberly), also of Ormond Beach. Two great-grandsons, Ethan and Aaron Flower, reside in Cartersville, Georgia. Mrs. Shapiro is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shapiro was predeceased by her grandson Scott Flower, as well as her sister, Elena Schipper of New Jersey.
