Sally Schlencher Traul, 74, of Plantation Bay in Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away March 2nd 2017 at Halifax Hospital, surrounded by her husband, Bob; her children, Kristine, Eric and Jennifer; and her grandson, Matthew. Sally was born on October 8, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Paul and Alice Schleucher, who shortly thereafter changed their name to "Schlencher". She grew up in Findlay, Ohio, graduating from high school with the Class of 1960. Sally attended Bowling Green State University (BGSU), where she studied art and English. On December 29th, 1962, while attending BGSU, Sally married her high school classmate, Robert E. Traul, Jr. Bob and Sally would go on to enjoy a loving life together for the next 54 years. Sally continued her studies at BGSU part-time until Bob's graduation in 1964, when they moved to Columbus, Ohio. Sally and Bob remained in Columbus until 1966, moved briefly to Colorado, but returned to Columbus in 1967 so that Bob could attend dental school. It was during this time that Sally, while raising two children, began a successful modeling career and began training for a career as a dental hygienist. Sally graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 with an RDH certificate and a Bachelor's degree in Education. In December, 1971, Sally and family moved to the Chicago area where Sally's modeling career really took off as exclusive talent with the Shirley Hamilton Modeling Agency. Her very successful and diverse print and on-screen career included a United Airlines commercial with Arnold Palmer and a "Clio" award-winning commercial for Motorola, filmed by Joe Sedelmaier.
Sally continued modeling part-time and practicing dental hygiene until 1978, when her third child was born. This marked the end of her modeling career but just the beginning of her "dual-role" of full time Mom and dental hygienist that lasted through three more moves: in 1981, to Glenwood Springs, Colorado; in 1986, to Naples, Florida; and in 2002, to Galena, Illinois. In Galena, Sally finally got to enjoy a life-time dream of owning a horse and riding trails with wonderful friends. As a child, she and a classmate would save baby-sitting money to go to the stables and ride horses. Sally and her trusty quarter-horse, "Pickle," quickly became best friends. Daily visits to the barn soon became the highlight of her days, even though Sally continued to practice dental hygiene.just enough to pay Pickle's boarding fees! In Galena, Sally was also able to help care for her parents by sharing her home with them until her father Paul's death in 2014. Shortly thereafter, her mother Alice moved to Ormond Beach, Florida to live with Sally's youngest sister's family. Sally and Bob followed to Ormond Beach in 2015.
Sally loved her horses, reading, cooking and her favorite sports teams. She kept a journal and could easily tell you who came to family dinners and what was on the menu. She also enjoyed the family property in Canada and participating in "Work Week" with Bob and his sisters. Sally was the designated cook, often planning menus months in advance. Nothing was more important to Sally than family. She was always loving, always giving, always happy to help in time of need, whether it was for hospital visits, preparing food or serving as "laundry Mom" for Jennifer's softball team. She is greatly and forever missed.
Sally is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Traul, of Ormond Beach, FL; her children, Kristine (Dan Goldblatt) Paul, of Edina, MN, Eric (Paola) Traul of Montgomery, IL and Jennifer Traul of Kings Bay, GA; her Mother, Alice Schleucher, of Ormond Beach; her sisters, Susan (Tom) Carroll of Davidson, NC and Nancy (Bob) Provenzano of Ormond Beach, FL; her grandchildren, A. Robert (Tian) Dawes, John (Angelika) Paul, Matthew Paul, Andrew Goldblatt and Isabella Traul; her great-grandson, Reeve Dawes; along with many nieces, nephews and her good friends Scout and Bud. Sally was preceded in death by her father, Paul Schleucher and her horse, Pickle. Her loving family will celebrate her life later this year in a private ceremony.
