Sally Ann Dzioba Goodman

January 24, 1946 ~ November 21, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Sally Ann Dzioba Goodman announces her departure from this world, but it is with great hope that we send her on a joyous journey to the next world. Sally passed away on Sunday, November 21 ^st surrounded by friends, family, and her favorite music. Sally was born the eldest of two daughters to Peter and Frances Dzioba in Cleveland, Ohio. The family moved initially to Flagler Beach in 1954 to live with her grandmother and establish a new home in Florida. They relocated a couple of years later to Ormond Beach where her parents lived until 2004. Sally graduated from Mainland High School in 1963 in the first class at its new location. She attended Florida State University where she graduated with a BA degree in Education. While at FSU, Sally joined the Florida State University's circus and performed as a trapeze artist. She married John Bartels and spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone while he was in the army. They later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he worked as a CPA and she taught school for 20 years. Some years later, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and married Al Goodman. She completed a master's degree at Tennessee State University so that she could teach students with special needs. Eventually, she returned to Daytona Beach and taught for many years at Deltona Middle School. During most of these years, Sally loved playing tennis, playing golf, and fishing wherever there was water. Sally loved the beach which in her younger years was populated by huge sand dunes and not the high-rise condos that cover them now. Sally also adored cats and throughout her life took in many homeless felines into her home.

Sally was a compassionate and fierce warrior. She cared deeply for her students in Special Education and advocated strongly for them and other worthwhile causes. She taught her students, who had severe disabilities, those life skills that could help them live independent lives. As part of this effort, they learned to prepare meals, buy groceries, manage money, and handle many daily activities necessary to live independently. Every year, her students would create wonderful gifts they could sell to raise money for their other projects. She won many awards to include the Teacher of the Year for Volusia County as well as awards at the state level for her innovative science programs. She always worked toward imbuing her students with the ability to think for themselves and to become resourceful.

Her warrior skills played a significant part in her fight to survive her illness. One of the nurses in her last stay at the hospital marveled at her incredibly strong heart – both a physical and figurative attribute. Ultimately, she lost that battle but put up a great fight. Sally was predeceased by her parents for whom she was their primary caregiver in their later years. She leaves behind a loving sister Nancy Frashuer (Andy) of Jacksonville, FL, niece Anya Frashuer of Phoenix, AZ, cousins Barbara Schleicher of Ormond Beach, FL, Vernice Cato (Eli) of Atlanta, GA, many cousins on her father's and mother's sides, and lifelong friends Nancy Von Giardino, Ontario, Canada, and Peggy Thompson Cobb, Daytona Beach, FL. The family would like to extend their appreciation to her main caregivers in the last year of her life for their support and loving care. These include Martine Noel, R.N., Margaret Benko, R.N., Paula Cooper, R.N., Trisha Kelly, L.P.N., and family member Donna Schleicher.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Lohman Funeral Home – Daytona at 1423 Bellevue Ave on Saturday, December 11th. Visitors will be received at 3:00 PM with a funeral service to begin at 4:00 PM. A gathering will follow in the Reception Room at Lohman's.
