Roy H. Trullinger, 92, a World War II Naval Veteran & Merchant Marine peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021.  Born in 1929 in Oakland, California, his family moved to the Canal zone in Panama.  After attending high school in the Panama Canal Zone, he joined the US Navy, completing submarine school and worked on the USS Diablo & USS Orion in which he received a World War II Victory Metal. He then went on to serve in the Naval Reserve.

After his time in the Navy, Roy attended USC, but the sea called to him and became a Merchant Marine where he joined the Master, Mates & Pilots in Los Angeles, California.  With his strong knowledge of the stars and his sextant in hand, Roy navigated the ships and travelled the world by ocean.  His favorite trip was to travel from Los Angeles through the Panama Canal, around the continent of South America through the straits of Magellan, and then return home to Los Angeles. He also had a love of language and believed it was always important to try to learn other languages, so he decided he would teach himself.  He was fluent in Spanish, spoke some German, Italian, Portuguese and was currently learning Mandarin prior to his passing.

When he was not at sea and in port in Los Angeles, he would stay at The Little White Boarding House, where he would meet the future love of his life, Charlene. Roy, a skilled guitar player and romantic at heart, would often serenade Charlene in Spanish and English.  They would go on to marry and raise 3 children.  Being a kind, gentle and jovial person, he loved family life by teaching his children both the practical and the fun side of daily life.  He had a great love of animals and smiled anytime he saw one.  He felt music was also important, encouraging his children to learn an instrument - each playing a different instrument and going into the entertainment field.

In his later years, he loved spending time with family, friends and with one of his best friends, fellow veteran Tim Stamper telling stories, jokes, laughing and watching TCM classic movies.  He especially treasured every moment he spent with his grandson, Roy, who together laughed and joked daily.

Roy is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Charlene, his 3 children: George Trullinger of DeLand, FL, Bobby Trullinger of Las Vegas, NV, Sandra Trullinger of New York, NY.  He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Dawn Trullinger and grandson, Roy Trullinger of DeLand, Florida.  Predeceasing Roy was his mother, DeLand resident and Artist, Ann Lattin.

Services for Roy will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021 from 1:30-5pm with visitation from 1:30-3:30pm immediately followed by Funeral Service & Celebration Of Life from 3:30 – 5pm at Lohman Funeral Home DeLand, 935 E New York Ave, DeLand, Florida.
