Roy Luther
Johnson
November 7, 1939 – March 23, 2026
Roy Luther Johnson Sr., age 86, peacefully passed away on March 23, 2026.
Roy lived a life built on service, steady hands, and a heart that never stopped making room for others.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, then raised in Virginia by his parents, John and Nellie Johnson. He grew up learning the value of hard work and responsibility. After attending high school in Powhatan, Virginia, he chose a path of service and joined the United States Air Force. There, as an airplane mechanic, he continued the craft that would shape the rest of his life, the satisfaction of fixing what was broken and keeping things running when others depended on him.
After “six years, eight months and two days” in the Air Force, Roy stepped into his next chapter of life. He built a long, respected career as a master mechanic. He earned multiple ASE Master Certifications and an International Fluid Power Certification, achievements that reflected not just talent, but pride in doing things the right way. In 1970, he opened One Stop Automotive in Holly Hill, a shop built on trust and honesty. Later, he joined Florida Power and Light, where he served as a Lead Technician for the Central Florida fleet for over 40 years.
Roy’s life wasn’t defined only by the work of his hands. It was defined by the work of his heart. In 2010, the people of Holly Hill elected him Mayor, trusting him to guide their community. He served two successful terms, and even after that, he continued serving as District 4 Commissioner and Vice Mayor, giving his time, his energy, and his voice to the city he loved.
Roy’s journey was marked by deep love and deep loss. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; his son, Roy L. Johnson Jr. (“Buster”); and his brothers, John Wesley Johnson Jr., Edward Earl Johnson, Robert David “Pete” Johnson, and Donald Gene Johnson.
Roy shared a bond that meant more than words could capture with his children. Roy’s legacy continues through his survivors: his son, Steve Johnson; his daughter, Deanna Christine Newkirk; his grandsons, Dallas Von Newkirk and Roy Johnson III (BJ); BJ’s wife, Keri Johnson; and his great grandsons, Ethan James Johnson and Logan Edward Johnson.
He is also survived by his siblings: his brothers, James Clyde Johnson and John “Johnny” Johnson; and his sisters, Virginia Carolyn Johnson Harris and Joyce May Johnson Zaleski.
Family for Roy was never limited to blood. He was a father figure to Casey Yunick, who, along with his wife Shannon and their daughter Sailor Kathleen Yunick, extended the family circle.
Roy Johnson Sr. will be remembered as a man who showed up for his family, for his friends, and for his city. Those who knew him will carry his memory not just in stories, but in the way he made them feel, supported, valued, and never alone. He was also a man of deep faith, a Christian whose life reflected his belief in God, and whose quiet strength and generosity were guided by those values.
A Visitation will be held from 12 PM to 1 PM, followed by a 1 PM Funeral Service on Friday, April 10th, 2026, at Holly Hill Church of Christ, 1725 Ridgewood Ave, Holly Hill, FL 32117. A Military Honors Burial will be held immediately after at Daytona Memorial Park, 1425 Bellevue Ave, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, in recognition of his service at the United States Air Force. Guests are welcome to wear traditional black. In honor of Roy's service to his country, red, white & blue attire is encouraged.
