Robert Witzig 87 years old of Edgewater passed away Sunday February 15 2009. Robert was born in New Hyde Park New York to Otto and Anna Witzig on February 2 1922. Robert served his country in the United States Navy and was a survivor of the sinking of the aircraft carrier USS Wasp CV7 during the battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. Robert is retired from the Nassau County N.Y. police department where he was assigned to the Marine division for 20 years. He was a member of the Stinger Club and the American Legion Post 285.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Gertrude (Smith) Witzig Son Richard (Geraldine) Witzig daughter Wendy Langley grandchildren Geoffrey Langley Lauren (Langley) Cramer Mary Elizabeth Witzig and Matthew Witzig great grandchildren Caden and Cole Cramer and Matthew Tripp Witzig . He is also survived by his sister Janet Early of East Meadow N.Y.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday February 28 at 11 AM at the Edgewater Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Care Center or the National Alzheimer's Association. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com.
