Robert James Thompson 98 died peacefully in his sleep at home on May 22 2012.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday June 3 2012 at 2:00 P.M at Lohman Funeral Home Daytona 1423 Bellevue Ave Daytona Beach FL 32114. Robert's family will receive guests one and a half hours prior to the service. He was born May 1 1914 in Cleveland Ohio to Robert B. and Catherine (Miller) Thompson. Following the death of his mother in 1922 his father moved his family to Winter Park Florida. In school Robert participated in all sports and graduated in 1932. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and served aboard the USS New Orleans. Upon discharge in 1937 he married his high school sweetheart Alice Lyon. They lived in Philadelphia until moving to Havertown Pennsylvania in 1954. He worked for 32 years for Home Life Insurance Company in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He was a past member of the Masons Optimists Lions and Elks. Alice and Robert lived with their family on a quiet street in Havertown Pennsylvania before retiring to Daytona Beach Florida in 1976. Robert was predeceased by his wife Alice Kathleen Thompson of over 62 years in 2001 and his son Richard B. Thompson in 2005. He was also predeceased by his two sisters; Florence Grace Ponder and Ruth Elizabeth Thompson Ingalls. Left to cherish his memory are his sons; Robert Bruce of Media Pennsylvania and James Edward (Ted) and his wife Sandy in Daytona Beach Florida. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter along with his best friend Joe Turcol and many other friends neighbors and family. Up into his 80's he enjoyed a good game of golf traveling and always loved to work a good crossword puzzle. Most of all he loved spending time with his sons and their families. A true gentleman who loved God Robert was blessed to live a long and happy life. He will be sorely missed. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona Beach.
