Sweeney
September 2, 1948 – August 30, 2024
Robert Ray Sweeney (Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend), of Port Orange, FL, moved on to his heavenly home at the age of 75 on Friday, August 30th 2024 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Robert (known to most as BOB) was born on September 2nd 1948 at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, FL. He was born to parents Aldine Rosina and Thomas William Sweeney. They raised him with his sisters Patricia and Ann and brother Bill on Howard Drive in Holly Hill. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School from 1st to 8th grade and Mainland High School for secondary education. After, high school Robert joined the Marines for 4 years and served two tours in Vietnam. Upon returning back to Daytona Beach, he soon met the love of his life Mary Lou to begin a 52 year loving marriage together on November 13, 1971. He poured himself into his family with three children Sonya Denise, Warren Ray and Robert Bryan. They attended Derbyshire Baptist Church where Robert came to know Jesus as his Savior and was baptized at Daytona Beach Baptist in 1989.
He was a hard working man providing for his family. His occupations included gas engineering, Burnup & Sims (construction foreman), Pepsi (special events), DHL Driver, John Hall Chevrolet and Guitar/Bass lessons instructor. He also earned his Culinary Degree and was on the Dean's list.
Some of his loves were playing guitar/electric bass, cooking and baking, Camping, teaching birds to talk, crossword puzzles and all things history. His greatest love was family and having visits from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of "THE BROTHERS QUARTET" and performed across the Southeast on his bass guitar. Even performing once at Peabody Auditorium with "The Kingsman Quartet"
Robert leaves to cherish his memory: His wife; Mary Lou Sweeney, His children; Sonya and husband Lyle Shearer of Ormond Beach, FL, Robert and wife Lisa Sweeney of Ocala, FL. Brother; Bill and wife Kathy Sweeney of Holly Hill, FL and Sister; Ann Dragoo of Port Orange, FL. Grandchildren; Jessica, Katie, Warren, Will, Kiera and Dylan. Great Grandchildren; Sophia, Juliana and AJ. He is also leaving a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Thomas and Aldine Sweeney, grandmother; Sadie Willcutt, son; Warren Ray Sweeney, sister; Patricia Alvord (Hanley)
A Celebration of Life for Robert will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024 at the Lohman Funeral Home 1201 Dunlawton Avenue in Port Orange. Reception to follow.
