McNamara Robert - Robert Emmett McNamara 88 Ormond Beach FL died peacefully at home Tuesday January 26 2010. Son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Edward J. and Margaret McNamara Bronx NY Mr. McNamara came to the Ormond Beach area in 1979 from Mt. Kisco N.Y. He was a graduate of Samuel Gompers High School Bronx N.Y. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard in March 24 1941 as an electricians mate and was honorably discharged as a veteran on March 18 1946 as electrical first mate (EMC1) and was awarded the good conduct metal. He served in WWII stationed in South Carolina and the eastern coast and then transferred to Greenland. During his service he installed complete power and lighting systems on two Loran Stations and electrical repairs and maintenance on other ships. He received a Silver Ice Skating Award from the News Welfare Association NY. He started working for Consolidated Ship Building in 1940. He began work for the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) in 1941 as an electrical repairman. He attended radio school at nights. In 1946 he worked for the New York Telephone Company (NYTel) for 14 years. After leaving the NYTel he began his own construction company REM Contracting Corporation in Hawthorne NY building custom residential warehouses apartment building retail building and office buildings. He moved to Florida 1979 and continued building residential and light commercial projects throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties with his son Dennis.
He enjoyed motorcycle riding into his 80's woodworking construction repairing and fixing mechanical things working with his hands and he was a member of the Daytona Moose Lodge 1263. He liked boating fishing ice skating and working in the yard and spending time with his 4 children and 11 grandchildren.
Survivors include 3 sons Robert E. McNamara Jr and his wife Michelle Mahopac NY Dennis J. McNamara and his wife Ellen Ormond Beach FL Thomas J. McNamara his wife Stacey Chuluota FL daughter MaryAnn McNamara-Ryan and her husband Charley Ormond Beach FL one brother Edward McNamara Ocala FL one sister Eileen Courtney Redding CT and 11 grandchildren Kelly Timothy Christopher Robert Shane Bridget Patrick Elizabeth Shannon Erin Megan. He is predeceased by his wife Irene T. McNamara of 47 years.
Memorial Mass for Robert Emmett McNamara will be celebrated at 11:00AM Saturday February 6 2010 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church Ormond Beach. Burial will follow in Volusia Memorial Park Ormond Beach. Viewing at Lohman Funeral Home 733 W. Granada Blvd Ormond Beach FL will be Friday February 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m.
