Robert Lee “Bob” Thompson

Robert Lee “Bob” Thompson went home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, September 14, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. His loving wife of 57 years and his five children were by his bedside as he peacefully passed away. He was 90 years old.

Bob was a quiet, soft-spoken man with a wonderful sense of humor and a gentle spirit. He had a way of making an impression without ever needing to be the center of attention. Those who had the privilege of knowing him quickly came to love him.

Born January 9, 1936, to Maury and Mary Thompson, Bob grew up surrounded by family—and by two grandmothers and a great-grandmother who happily spoiled him. One of his favorite stories from those early years was how they would sneak him a little glass of beer from the tavern located below the home where he lived from birth until age 20.

Bob graduated from Manual High School and went on to attend Indiana University. He built a long and successful career, working for 32 years with two credit unions. After retiring, Bob continued giving to others, spending many happy and meaningful years volunteering at Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Of all the things Bob accomplished in his life, however, the one he was most proud of was simple. In his own words, his greatest accomplishment was raising his five children. His family was the heart of his life. His legacy lives on through his wife, five children, nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Bob had many things that brought him joy. He loved golf, cheering on the Miami Dolphins, IU and Notre Dame college football, and the Indiana Fever. He enjoyed reading, doing scratch-offs, and spending time with the people he loved. He was also an author, writing the children’s book A Galaxy of Rhyme, a playful way of teaching children about the planets.

Bob lived his life quietly, with humor, kindness, devotion to family, and a willingness to give his time to others. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him, but his family finds comfort in knowing that his gentle presence remains with them—and that they now have a very special angel watching over them.

He will be celebrated with a private family memorial at a future date.
