Robert Hellermann Sr. 91 of Port Orange passed away March 12 2010 at his home. Bob was born in Trenton New Jersey and grew up and worked in Freehold NJ. When WWII began he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving as a fantail gunner on the aircraft carriers USS Franklin and Salerno Bay. He was injured during a kamikaze attack and was sent back to the states for a lengthy series of operations which eventually left him wheelchair bound. For the service to his country he was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon; Asiatic Pacific Ribbon; Philippine Liberation Ribbon; Victory Ribbon Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart. Bob owned and operated the Seascape Motel on South Atlantic Avenue with his wife Edith from 1952 until its sale in 1969. Bob and Edith found a house on the river and after settling in began focusing on health problems. Bob proved many doctors' diagnoses wrong; through pure determination and willpower he was able to travel fish and enjoy life for many years. Edith passed away in 1981. In 1984 Bob married Jacketta Hammond. For many years they traveled the world visiting places as far away as Alaska Fiji Australia and New Zealand. Jacketta passed away in 2001. In 2009 Bob married his best friend Maryellen Morrissey. Bob is survived by his wife Maryellen Hellermann; daughters Barbara Johnson (Ron) Karen Hellermann; son Robert Hellermann Jr.; two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday March 27 at The First United Methodist Church 305 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange.
