Robert P. Haviland 96 a long-time resident of Daytona Beach passed away on March 21 2010. He was born October 18 1913 in Cleveland Ohio. He earned his BS in electrical engineering from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1939 and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Eta Kappa Nu. Haviland proudly served our Country in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was a space and missile engineer with both the U.S. Navy and General Electric Company located in King of Prussia PA. He received eight patents relating to his work with guided missiles and authored 17 books and more than 100 articles on electronics communication computers solar power and the environment. In 1976 he and his late wife Opal Dorf-Haviland to whom he was married 64 years retired and relocated to Daytona Beach. He held offices in the Volusia-Flagler Environmental Council the Volusia-Flagler Section of the Sierra Club and the Environmental Action Committee of Daytona Beach. He was a member of both the county's Halifax-Indian River Task Force and the state's Department of Health Technical Review and Advisory Panel and spearheaded many other environmental efforts in the community. In 1991 he was awarded the Tmima Littner-Cohn Award from The League of Women Voters for his "untiring efforts on behalf of our community." The Volusia-Flagler Sierra Club in 2002 recognized him with the Jack Kleinberg Award. Haviland was a reserved yet curious man who always had numerous books on hand to be read. Although he kept himself quite busy with his environmental and technological endeavors he had a tremendous heart and never lost sight of the needs and concerns of his family. Left to cherish his memory are his three children; Kay (Willliam) Freilich of Phoenixville PA Jean Michael of Rincon Puerto Rico and Jon (Laurey) Haviland of Norco CA; grandchildren Robert Peg Jolene Nicolas Justin and Jared and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 3rd at 11:00am at Lohman Funeral Home 1423 Bellevue Avenue Daytona Beach FL. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to a charity of the donor's choice.
