Richard D. Wintenburg 63 died Friday September 13 - surrounded by family at Halifax Hospital - following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sayre Penn. his family moved to Wayne N.J. before finally relocating to Jacksonville Fla. A graduate of Paxon High School Wintenburg served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves for 11 years before transferring to the U.S. Army Reserves for another 14 years. The Vietnam veteran attended North Florida Junior College. He then graduated from the University of West Florida where he met his future wife Margaret. He served as a brother and president of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and president of the Inter-Greek Council at UWF. Richard also worked in Stuart Fla. at Goodyear Tire Company for a decade before managing St. Lucie Battery & Tire and serving in Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The Wintenburg family moved to Port Orange in 1994 and Richard suffered a debilitating stroke the following year. His resulting handicap served as inspiration; he returned to Halifax Hospital to volunteer for the next 17 years and as Treasurer of Halifax Health Auxiliary. He was also a dedicated Boy Scout Troop Leader and advocate for scouts across Florida. He enjoyed crossword puzzles college football craft beers cruise vacations and pinochle - and provided regular weather reports to loved ones. He took the most pride in his family and was a selfless man who touched many lives. Visitation services will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday September 17 at Lohman Funeral Home at 1201 Dunlawton Avenue Port Orange FL 32127. A memorial service will immediately follow. Richard is preceded in death by his parents Derrill and Helen Wintenburg. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Margaret (ne McPadden); son Adam and his wife Stephanie - expecting their first child Allison - of Tampa; daughter Amanda of New York City; sister Merlyn Roy and her husband Richard of Mount Dora; and many loving friends and family members.
