Richard F. Henderson 92 a long-time resident of DeLand passed peacefully at the Hospice Care Center in Orange City on February 21 2011. Mr. Henderson joined the United States Marine Corps in 1936 after graduating valedictorian of his high school class in Marion Virginia. As an enlisted man he saw action during WWII from Guam in the Mariana Islands to Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Island. A "Mustanger" who rose quickly through the ranks Master Sergeant Henderson earned a field promotion to warrant officer. After the war and as a fully commissioned officer Captain Henderson then served on Samoa and in 1953 while in an advance unit assisting a struggling government resist communism on Taiwan he was personally commended for extraordinary service by the Commandant of the Marine Corps of the Republic of China. In 1962 Major Henderson ended his military service and began a second career by graduating from Stetson University and teaching in Volusia County Schools. In his later years he enjoyed family friends and making people laugh. He was a good man who will be fondly remembered and genuinely missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his four children (Diane Latchaw Linda Gaylord Larry Henderson and Tim Henderson) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
