Obituary

Richard "Dick" Edson, 71, a lifetime resident of Daytona Beach, FL, passed away at home with his wife, Bettyanne at his side. Funeral services will be celebrated on Monday, October 7th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach; 118 Palmetto Avenue, Daytona Beach. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. A private family entombment will follow at Shady Rest Cemetery, Holly Hill, FL.

Richard graduated from Seabreeze High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in education from the University of Florida as well as his Master's degree from Stetson University. He returned home to teach advanced math/calculus at Seabreeze High School. After 37 years of education and having been awarded Teacher of the Year honors in 1991, Dick retired. During his tenure at Seabreeze, Dick also coached track and cross country. He was inducted into Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame as well as the National High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame, honoring his accomplishments over his career. He was a member of the FACA, the National Junior Olympics, and the NHSACA. Dick also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being with his family.
Dick was a fantastic husband, father, brother, "Gramps", teacher, coach, and Friend. "GO GATORS".

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Bettyanne Edson, Ormond Beach, son, Glen-Paul Edson and his wife Kelli of St. Petersburg, FL, sister, Naomi Durant and husband Chuck of S. Daytona, Beach, three grandchildren, Emmett, Kaelyn, and Lennon Edson, as well as three cousins, Eddie "Skip" Smallwood and wife, Laura, Daytona Beach, Ronnie Milligan and his wife Cathy, Merritt Island, FL, and Jody Milligan of Manchester, Maryland, four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Edson, New Smyrna Beach, FL, Marilyn Nash, Birmingham, AL, Patsy (Bill) Davis, Pope, MS, and Linda Marsh, Thomasville, GA, as well as sixteen nieces and nephews.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made in Dick's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at 370 CenterPointe Circle, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 (407) 771-2166; centralflorida@jdrf.org Condolences for the family may be shared through this online guestbook.
