Funeral Service for Richard N. Broughton Lt. Col. USAF Ret. who passed away on Monday October 17 2011 will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday November 4 2011 in The Chapel at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Boulevard Ormond Beach FL 32174. Interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. He was born on April 7 1921 in Newark NJ to Frank B. Broughton and Florence Broughton. He was raised in Newark NJ and from an early age was fascinated by aviation. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in World War II as a command pilot of a B-17 completing thirty-five bombing missions over occupied France and Germany. Following the end of World War II he briefly left the service and served as a pilot with Veterans Airlines flying relief supplies to eastern Europe before rejoining the U.S. Air Force in 1947. In 1948 he married Anna G. Tamburello and on October 2nd they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. He served with distinction in the Air Force in various assignments throughout the United States with the Strategic Air Command the Tactical Air Command and the U.S. Strike Command. In 1968 he was deployed to Viet Nam for a yearlong tour of duty. Upon his return from Viet Nam Richard retired from the Air Force in 1969 with numerous decorations including the Bronze Star. In September of 1969 he and his family moved from Tampa to Daytona Beach where he served as the business manager of Warren Taylor Ford and later Holiday Ford until 1976. Richard was very active for many years in the Ormond Beach Kiwanis Club where he served as past president. He was past member of the Halifax River Yacht Club and the Oceanside Country Club and he was very proud of his membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. He is survived by his wife Anna; two sons Robert (Mary) of Lexington KY and Craig (Carol) of Debary and four grandchildren. He will always be remembered by his family as a devoted and loving husband father and grandfather. He was a proud man with a strong sense of personal honor and duty to one's country but he was also a man of gentle wit and compassion.
