Funeral Services for Redwood Wharton age 92 of Ponce Inlet FL who passed away Sunday February 26 2006 will be Friday March 3rd at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Baggett & Summers Funeral Home. His family will receive friends from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM preceding the service. Interment will immediately follow at Daytona Memorial Park North. Redwood Wharton great nephew of philanthropist Joseph Wharton the founder of The Wharton School at the Univ. of PA moved to the Daytona Beach area as a child in 1917. As a youngster growing up near the ocean Redwood discovered his passion for fishing. Through the years he learned the science and the art of fishing. He graduated from Seabreeze HS in 1930 and attended the University of Florida for three years. After his father passed away in 1934 Redwood inherited a sizable amount of Inlet property. He later turned a portion of the property into a fishing camp. In 1939 he bought the ?Gay Wind? fishing boat which became the first charter boat at Inlet Harbor. By 1940 his marina docks were in place and Inlet Harbor Fishing Camp was open for business. While operating the fishing camp the ?Gay Wind? made numerous trips bringing in thousands of pounds of fish throughout the years. His boat today is now a part of the exhibits at Ponce Inlet Lighthouse village. In 1946 after serving in the US Coast Guard Redwood began expanding his business to include a seafood market and a restaurant. In 1984 Redwood sold the five acre multi-business operation. During his career Redwood wrote the ?Angler?s Handbook? in 1936 and in 1973 served at the request of Rep. Bill Chappell on the 4th Congressional District Oceanography Committee. He is survived by his loving family who will miss him dearly; his wife of seven years Marie his son Folger of Port Orange FL; two daughters Libby of Port Orange FL and Cathy of Ormond Beach FL; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
