A Memorial Service for Raymond C. Nichols Sr. 91 will be held at 6:30pm Tuesday June 30 2009 at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach FL. Mr. Nichols passed away on June 26 2009 from health complications at Southland Suites in Ormond Beach where he resided with his wife Mary. Mr. Nichols lived in Florida for over 50 years and moved here with his family from Fairfield CT. He was born in Bridgeport CT. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II in the 85th Infantry Division Company "F" 2nd Battalion which was instrumental in the liberation of Rome Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy. Following his service to his country Mr. Nichols entered a trade school in Connecticut where he obtained his training to become a Plumber. He and his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale FL in 1957 where he continued to work as a Plumber and then became the primary estimator for one of the largest plumbing contractors in South Florida at that time. The company was involved in the high-rise condominium building that took place in South Florida during the 1960 to 1970 time period. He went on to become a Master Plumber and remained a member of local union #719 in Ft. Lauderdale for over 60 years where he was inducted as an Honor Roll Member. He and his wife moved to Central Florida where he continued to work as a plumber at the original Disney World projects. He later became the Chief Plumbing Inspector for Seminole County until he retired in 1983. He and his wife moved to the Port Orange area in 1985 where they resided in their condominium until moving to Southland Suites in Ormond Beach in 2007. Mr. Nichols always enjoyed all types of sports with a particular fondness of the Orlando Magic basketball team. He was very involved with his two sons as they grew up in Ft. Lauderdale participating on several sports teams. He and his wife always enjoyed dancing at the various clubs in the area. He is survived by his wife of over 70 years Mary; his sons: Raymond C. Nichols Jr. & his wife Alice of Tampa FL and Kenneth E. Nichols & his wife Kathy owner of Advantage Insurance Group LLC in Ormond Beach; four grandchildren: Chris Tracey Katie and Matthew; three great-grandchildren: Jeremy Rebecca and Samantha; his sister-in-law Helen Horvath of Bridgeport CT and his tow nephews Jonathan and Jimmy.
