Obituary

Mr. Raoul Gilbert Rehrer, 87, of Palm Coast, Florida died on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the Bridgeview Center in Ormond Beach. He was the son of the late Raymond Henry Rehrer and Laomi Rehrer of Columbia, SC. He was the husband of Susan Jane Connors-Rehrer. He is also survived by his children Raymond Joel Rehrer of Middletown, MD, Robin Maria Evans of Palm Coast, Matthew James Rehrer of Melbourne, FL and Warren Connors Rehrer of Dover, DE. Additionally, he is survived by his step-son Kelly Gene Vonhatten of Palm Coast and five grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth Rehrer, Morgan Marie Evans, Jake Austin Rehrer, Jesse Michael Rehrer and Emily Rose Rehrer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Ilene Rehrer, and a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Rehrer.

Raoul was born on December 31, 1925 in Reading, PA, but was raised in Columbia, SC, in his early years. During the Depression his family relocated first to Dover, NJ, and then Dobbs Ferry, NY, where he graduated from high school and entered the United States Army Air Force on December 31, 1943. After WWII, he remained in the Air Force as a navigator and served in the Berlin Airlift, flying night photo reconnaissance in the Korean War and Air Sea Rescue out of Hawaii. During the later he developed a keen interest in marine biology.

In 1959 he left the Air Force to study marine biology. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1963 and worked for the University's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences as a research biologist until 1979. He then worked for a time as a consultant on environmental impact studies before becoming a hydrologist for the Everglades National Park. He retired from federal service in 1996 and relocated to Palm Coast where he enjoyed the natural environment of the region, aviation at the Flagler County Airport, and his family until his passing.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 11: 00 am until the Funeral Service at 12 Noon at the Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast, 220 Palm Coast Parkway SW, Palm Coast, FL 32164. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined. Condolences may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
