In loving memory of our mom, Pina LaTorre, who passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2016, a celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at The Lohman Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, FL during the hours of 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM at The Basilica of St. Paul, 317 Mullally Street, Daytona Beach, followed by graveside services at Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach where she will be laid to rest beside our dad Mario La Torre.
Pina was born on October 9, 1937 in Catania, Sicily. She met the love of her life, Mario La Torre and was married on a rooftop looking over the Ionian Sea in Italy. She moved to the United States where she and Mario raised five children in West Orange, NJ. While in New Jersey, Pina began a successful career in banking. The family then moved to Ormond Beach, FL in 1972 where Pina continued her Florida banking career to later become the Vice-President at The Bank of Ormond-By-The-Sea.
She was a board member of the local American Cancer Society and Heart Association, and for numerous years chaired the local annual Breast Cancer and Heart Walks. Pina enjoyed extensive travel, with Mario and later John, but her greatest passion was her family. She was better known as "Nona" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she deeply treasured and spent countless hours with. Her latter years were filled with so much joy, as post-retirement allowed her to fulfill her passion for gardening. Pina knew how blessed she was in having all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in one neighborhood, as it truly made her life complete. She was a great wife, an amazing mom, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to so many, and the memories of her zest for life will be treasured forever.
Pina was predeceased by her first husband of 43 years, Mario La Torre and by a Godson, Joe Coco. Survivors include her current husband John Datillo of 15 years, daughters Laura Green (Mike), Angela Nickell, Mary Greenlees (Jim), Susie Rivers (Rick), son Joseph La Torre (Susie) all of Ormond Beach; step-son Mike Datillo (Marilyn) and step-daughters Rachel Dietz (Brandon), Lori Lapp (Paul), and Alyssa Hoyt (Garrett); sisters include Franca Lombardo of West Orange, NJ, Mary Aparo of Ormond Beach, grandchildren Daniel Nickell (Andrea), Austin Green (Boram), Jessica Lapp (Bligh), Russell Greenlees, Jason Rivers, Gena La Torre, Mario La Torre; great-grandchildren Matthew, Austin and Kevin Nickell, God children Maria Batta (Steve), Phillip La Torre (Laura) and Francis Fuoco (Samuel) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Floral tributes to be added to "Pina's Garden" are welcomed. For those wishing, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Family Renew Community or Habitat for Humanity, Daytona Beach, FL.
