Pauline ""Polly"" McFarland Welshinger of Daytona Beach Florida died Sunday December 19 2010. She was the widow of Carroll T. ""Spike"" Welshinger long-time football coach and principal of Mainland High School during the 1930's to 1970's. Mrs. Welshinger was born in Fort Pierce on January 10 1915 to Jarvis W. and Ola Rountree McFarland. The family lived in Vero Beach during Polly's high school years and moved to Daytona Beach in 1933 when they founded McFarland Furniture Company. Polly began her studies at Stetson University the same year. While studying Music and English at Stetson she was also active in many sports served as president of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority was inducted into the Mortar Board Honor Society and was chosen May Queen and ""Most Versatile Senior"". She was noted in ""Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities"". After her graduation in 1936 she taught English at Holly Hill Junior High and later at Mainland High School where she met her beloved ""Spike"". They married June 3 1939 and shared 57 years together before his death in 1997. They enjoyed their friends travel and golf. Polly continued to play golf with the Ladies' Golf Association at Oceanside Country Club into her 90's. She was involved in many community activities and family life along with her work as vice president and co-owner of McFarland Furniture Company. She was a past president of the Junior League of Daytona Beach and a member of the Palmetto Woman's Club Halifax Historical Society Halifax River Yacht Club Zeta Tau Alpha Alumni Association and the Panhellenic Association. She is survived by her daughters Linda Hardman and Shirley Holt; son-in-law Coleman Holt; four grandchildren James Dunlop and wife Myra Daniel Dunlop and wife Linda Julie Preston and husband Frederick and Gregory Hardman; four great-grandchildren Austin Dunlop Jacob Dunlop Elizabeth Preston and Frederick Preston Jr. She is also survived by her brother James D. McFarland and his wife Louise; niece Judith Ryan and husband James; nephews James D. McFarland Jr. and Robert McFarland and wife Cathy; and many cherished friends. She was under the loving care of her caregivers Sheryl Butler and Nicole Dobbs her family and the Hospice of Volusia-Flagler. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Thursday January 6 2011 at 11:30am at the Halifax River Yacht Club.
