A Funeral Service for Olga Homenny Skordinski 85 of Bishop's Glen Holly Hill who entered into the Lord's loving care on Saturday March 21 2009 and is singing in His choir of angels for eternity will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 129 N. Halifax Ave. Daytona Bch on Monday March 30 2009 at 11:00am with Father Joseph Samaan and Father Michael Byars officiating. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life during a visitation on Sunday March 29 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00pm with a "Trisagion" memorial prayer service at 7:00pm by Father Joseph Samaan at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach FL. Our dear sister aunt and friend Olga was born on October 27 1923 in Scranton PA. She was a precocious child and always loved being around people. Olga was raised by her maternal grandfather her hero John Martin her dear mother Julia Homenny and her beloved aunt Nell Martin. She greatly loved and admired her grandfather John from whom she learned the love of family and church. In 1987 her grandfather was one of the founders of Saints Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Scranton PA. After a disastrous fire in 1912 her grandfather John mortgaged the family home to rebuild the church. Olga was a lifelong choir member from the age of 9 and also served as her grandfather's secretary for many years while he was a parish council president at St. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Scranton PA. Olga attended Scranton Technical High School and graduated in 1941. During the 1940's Olga worked for the A.C. Cohen Public Adjusting Co. The Jewish Home for the Friendless and the Anthracite Overall Manufacturing Co. all of which were in Scranton. She volunteered in the Red Cross during WWII in Scranton and during the Vietnam War counseling veterans at Bethesda Naval Hospital in MD. On May 23 1948 Olga married Michael Skordinski of Wilkes Barre PA at Saints Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church. She was a lifetime member of the Federated Russian Orthodox Clubs (FROC). In 1954 she and Mike moved to the Washington DC area where they lived for 25 years. Olga was very active at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church as a choir member Dormition Sisterhood Ladies Guild member church treasurer member of the church board of trustees and "R" club member. Olga received a ""Gramato Award one of the highest honors a layman can receive in the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1975 she and Mike moved to New Smyrna Beach FL for a short time and later moved to the Oceans III Condominium in Daytona Beach Shores FL. In 1978 Olga served as an Oceans Racquet Club Board member. They then built a home in Ponce Inlet FL where lived for almost 30 years. Olga was a member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church the church choir the St. Barbara Ladies Philoptochos Society where she was the president in 1998. She was a choir member and Ladies Guild member of the St. Simeon Russian Orthodox Church in Titusville. Olga was a member of the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). In 2006 they moved to Bishop's Glen a retirement community in Holly Hill. After 75 years of singing in church choirs Olga joined the Bishop's Glen Chorus. In addition to serving in all their church parishes the Skordinskis fervently believed in supporting St. Tikhon's (South Canaan PA) St. Vladimir's (Crestwood NY) and St. Herman's (Kodiak AK) Orthodox Theological Seminaries because they teach young priests of tomorrow. After church and family came music. Olga had a radio playing 24/7 at home and even during her last six months in the hospital. Olga and Mike were staunch supporters members volunteers and hosts of various events for the London Symphony Orchestra the Daytona Beach Symphony Society the Seaside Music Theater the Daytona Beach International Festival the Central Florida Cultural Endeavors Inc. and the Friendship Force. Olga hand decorated eggs in her Ukrainian family tradition most of her life. She was known by many as the "Russian Egg Lady". Over the years Olga gave egg painting demonstrations to local clubs colleges and art groups. Olga was predeceased by her grandfather John Martin; her father Joseph Homenny; her mother Julia Homenny; her Aunt Nell Martin and five other maternal aunts and uncles. Olga is survived by her beloved husband Michael (Mike) Skordinski of Holly Hill; her sister Barbara Homenny Nyce (Bill) of Springfield VA; nieces and nephews: Rebecca Nyce Dobbins (Tom) of Washington DC Christopher Nyce (Carol) of Vienna VA Adina Nyce of Alexandria VA Alexander Nyce of Springfield VA Dr. Faith Skordinski of Germantown PA Ann Marie Bretz of Mcungie PA Sandra Rosenberger of Clarksville MD; seven great-nieces and nephews; cousins: Joni Martin Rands of Springfield VA Linda Ann (Martin) Gustafson of Milford CT Gerald Martin of San Diego Ca; Goddaughter: Donna Daniluck Bergman (Steven) of Gaithersburg MD; Dear friends and Caregivers throughout her illness Helen Kostidakis (Perry) of Ormond Beach FL and Maria Andreoulas (Pete) of Ormond Beach.
