NOVIA MALZONE CUMBERLEDGE

Was born of Peter and Angeline Malzone. March 18th 1934 She grew up in Pittsburg PA with 2 sisters Mary and Edith and 3 brothers Frankie, Raymond and Tony. At an early age my mother would shovel coal for a dime and on a good week would go to the movie theater with her older brothers and get to have a candy bar. My mother was loved and cherished by her family. My mother worked many jobs growing up but working as a waitress with her sister at 17 is when she met the love of her life. Mom says daddy came into the restaurant and asked her sister who she was and informed her right then and there that he was going to marry her and make her his wife. Mom would say that daddy said he was going to dress her up n baby doll clothes and love her forever. They married and settled into marital bliss. At 19 she gave birth to her 1st child Claudia Marie and fell in love as a Mother. She later continued to have 5 more daughter all with in a 1 &frac;12; of each other. 10 years of child birth that led to 6 girls by the time she was 29. My mother used cloth diapers and hung her clothes out on a line in all weather. As young girls we grew up enjoying family outings in the mountains and parks. My mother was a great Italian cook and she made homemade Pizza and squid spaghetti. She would have us go outside to pick dandelions and squash flowers so she could prepare them for an extra special touch to our dinners. We grew up in a house full of Italian Love and food. As a mother she learned to drive and would always be outside of the school waiting for us to drive home. She would take us Halloween and would follow us slowly always watching over us. As we began to get older mom began to work nights in a nursing home for Xmas or school money. I don't know when she as she was always present at a school function or event. Mom enjoyed bingo some Saturday nights when dad was home or if my older sister Claudia would watch us. My mother enjoyed bowling and was on a league. We bought 10 acres of land and put a trailer on it. My dad would take us on the weekend and we loved to run and pick wild fruit and cherries while my parents planted a garden. We would go for ice-cream on the way home and enjoyed many summer afternoons together.

My mother enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets and became a collector of many things. She would buy and sell antique furniture and things and my sisters and we had a hobby as a family spending time together. By the wits of my mother she kept our family together and we were afforded luxuries we otherwise would not of hand. She went back to school and obtained her HS diploma. In the early 70s my mother moved us all down to Florida to live with her brother our Uncle Tony. She bought her home in Ormond Beach and we began a new life here. My mother continued working as a Nurses aid doing private duty and was loved by many people. She was a kind and loving companion and was loved deeply by all who met her. She later decided she wanted to continue with her education and enrolled in the Human services department at DBCC. She earned an AS degree and was on the president list the whole time with a 4.0 average. She got a job with ACT Corporation and worked for 18 years as a residential advisor with the chronically mentally ill population, of which she loved. Mom was admired and recognized by her peers and went on to begin to study for her BA in Psychology. Due to my father falling ill in the late 8- mom needed to retire and take care of her loving husband till his death. Mom went on to be the matriarch of the family living alone for another 27 years. Novia grew to be a grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. As they say out of 1 came many. Mom was loved by her son in laws that she would shower with her love and great hugs. Mom loved to travel and went to Las Vegas many times 7 I think. My mother loved Bingo and her friends at the senior center. The most important part of my mother's life was in her charity work. She gave to many many charities and organizations, The St. Jude's foundation was one of her most favorite. She sent her checks in monthly and never missed for over 20 years. She would write letters sending donations and asking if she could send more to help build schools for the children she was sponsoring. Her Philanthropic work was who she really was at heart. She was most proud when she was giving. And always with a modest intention, most times we never knew. As her final days of life came mom enjoyed a kind visit and a cup of McDonald's coffee. My mother was an extremely proud and independent woman who drove herself to the bank and thrift store to visit her friends she would say. My mother is leaving a home and many children and family who loved her dearly. We will keep our treasured memories she allowed us to share with her in our hearts forever. We will try to use her life and examples she bestowed upon us as a foundation for our future. Mom loved God and always knew his hand was at work in her life. She was a wonderful Christian and knew her bible verses by memory. Some of her favorites were Ecc 3 and John 3.16. Mom would like to leave this world knowing she was a good role model and Christian, Mom will always be looking down form the heavens on all she loved and will be sending down special favors for those who knew her best.
