Obituary

A Memorial Service will be held for Norman ?Bert? Carr age 89 of Daytona Beach on Saturday August 19 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. before the service and burial will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Daytona Memorial Park. Bert passed away on Wednesday August 2 2006 at Waterman Village in Mt. Dora FL. Bert was born on May 24 1917 in Port Norris NJ to Norman S. and Mabel L. Harris Carr. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1941 with a Masters degree in Education. In 1942 Bert enlisted in the U.S. Army. His tour of duty included serving in World War II where he was in charge of the POW?s held in France. On February 27 1943 he married Lillian Carroll Foster and spent the next sixty-three years loving her and his family. Bert was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946 as a Major. After serving his country in the military Bert was appointed by President Eisenhower to set-up schools in Central America for the U.S. Government. Bert later served as the head of the South Eastern Signal School at Ft. Gordon GA and his last assignment before retirement was serving as the Educational Director for Armed Forces stationed at Ft. McPherson GA. In 1977 Bert who was a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve retired from Civil Service duties with the U.S. Government. Upon retirement Bert and Carroll moved to Daytona Beach. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach since 1980. Bert is survived by his wife Carroll and daughter Nancy C. Spain and her three children: Todd Spain and his wife Alicia and daughter Kayla of Debary FL; Brian Spain of North Hollywood CA; and Brent Spain of Orlando FL. Memorial donations in Bert?s honor may be made to Hospice of Lake-Sumter County 12300 Lane Park Road Tavares FL 32778 352 742-6861.
