Nicholas J. Howanitz (77) originally from Jordan, NY died unexpectedly February 23 at his home in Port Orange, FL. Devoted husband to his wife Linda of 55 years; proud and loving father to his three daughters Melissa (Johnpaul) Long, Sarah (Jesse) Long, and Rachael Howanitz; and "Papa Extraordinaire" to his three grandchildren Kathryn Ellen, Christian Nicholas, and Lucas James. One of seven children, he is survived by two sisters Alice (Ron) Miller and Patricia (Bill) Waters; he was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Alice, brothers Paul and Vincent, and sisters Arlene and Anne.

After graduation from Jordan-Elbridge high school in 1965, Nick went into the US Army Combat Engineers division. Following his honorable discharge and a 34-year career with Verizon, he enjoyed traveling across country in his motor home and numerous cruises where he loved meeting new people. He was a fan of SU sports, cheering them on when they were winning and cursing them when losing.

Nick was proud of the house that he built on Cross Lake where he and Linda raised their daughters and entertained friends and family. Despite being a disabled veteran, a stickler for perfection, Nick never stopped working - doting on his family and keeping his homes in pristine condition.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
